The Strengths To Being Genuine

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Truth Be ToldI had a discussion with a friend at lunch about truth in people and their behavior. He reminded me that "Everyone Lies." I thought that was a sad commentary on all of us but true to a lesser or greater degree depending how we live our lives. But there are

Strengths To Being Genuine.

In real estate we should be upfront about a listing price for a home to properly market it and attract offers. Men and women together often put on fronts till they get to know one another better.

So what are some possible strengths with wearing the minimum number of masks in our lives or if we could only wear one and just be ourselves?

  • Being genuine, people don't have to figure out who the real you is. YOU is YOU. What you show is what is real. Real is good.
  • There is less pressure on you. No need to keep remembering the "correct" lie or fake you
  • You can definitely lead a more peaceful life being genuine
  • Your alignment of our inside and your outside gives you a sense of harmony, or correctness with the universe of who you are suppose to be to others
  • Finally, your sense of oneness, that who you say you are and who you are, that synching up of the two, gives you high self-esteem

All great reasons to try and be as genuine in all the things you do in life as you can. It is not easy. Look at the pressure for success, status or even beauty for women (as seen in this video). I think at age 92 we accept the wrinkles and the loose skin and probably can really laugh at a tool such as Photoshop. Much younger, who knows, photoshop on business cards or Botox, maybe it just makes us feel better inside. Wouldn't it be nice to accept others and especially accept ourselves just as we are? Sure would be a better world if we did.

Lies -- my biggest pet peeve. My dad always told us to never lie because you just have to tell another lie to cover up for that one and another to cover up for that one... The best advice ever. The  truth will always come out -- always.

Great post, Gary. I always try to live the "WYSIWYG" way. I have to admit, though, that while I really like who I am and am trying to age gracefully, watching that video clip makes me want to "photoshop" myself just for fun! :D

I think most people just think that they appreciate someone being genuine.  Most people don't want the truth.  They want the dreams and the fantasy instead of what they see as the ugly reality.  Go out and tell people that you are concerned about them and really think that they should try to lose some weight.  They aren't going to thank you for being honest and genuine. They'll think that you are a rude jerk who should keep out of their business.  To function in society, you really can't be totally honest with everything.

Gary, life becomes difficult when you try to be someone else. Being genuine has to be more than skin deep.

Genuine and congruent is the key to being real. Sometimes in our business life, we are being challenged on that every day.

Great comments all. I think we never go wrong striving to be true to ourselves and present that to others. Shakespeare's thought on to thine own self be true is very valid for keeping our sanity. We should never fool ourselves who we really are.

I love this line, Gary: Finally, your sense of oneness, that who you say you are and who you are, that synching up of the two, gives you high self-esteem

It also gives you power. Power to continue being who you are.

And for Lori (#7), I hate to say this, but there is little dignity in growing old, and I don't know why people use that phrase or hope to aspire to it because you will be sorely disappointed if you do. I think the best you can do is embrace the fact you're still kicking and be thankful your vision is going downhill. LOL.

Gary,

Excellent post and great points.  Being authentic will engender trust and people will be drawn to you.  Genuine people are a breath of fresh air, and it is delightful to talk to someone who is not choosing their words in order to seek approval from someone.  Thanks for sharing this with us.  All the best.

Gary: Bottom line is, I think people who are genuine are punished by a society that not only doesn't see value in being genuine, but rewards the insincere in many ways.

Great post and exactly how I conduct myself in life.  People appreciate honesty and integrity because they always know where they stand with me.  Most people can spot BS from a mile away and don't want to work with someone who isn't forthright.

I've had so many jobs where I was forced to be secretive, and I hated it, and I just want to say I am so happy that I work for a culture that encourages me to be me and where everyone is encouraged to be positive and share information.

Keller Williams Rocks!

I know several people in my personal life (who I no longer hang around) who are chronic liars..who tell lies to cover lies and cannot remember what they told to whom. They think they are being so smart, when really it is just sad.

I agree with you that the older we get, the more we care about the inner selves and less about the outer selves. After all, you won't be taking the outer self with you!

Gary, I always enjoy your posts.  There is so much you say in each one.  In our business, I believe it's vital to be genuine, but unforutanately, I find many that aren't....for a variety of reasons.  I must stay that I struggle with this aspect of our careers.  I put "me" out there every day and some work so hard at being someone else...sad to be and obvious many times.  Thanks for your post.

Never saw that particular video, it's shocking to see what happened to that model with the final result. I like what you said 'sense of oneness'.  Thanks for the great post.

Great topic Gary. This goes for those sneaky buyers too!

I encounter many people who are intimidated by me: other agents and consumers. They are often suprised when they meet me and Im genuine and sincere. I dont like or distort the truth. I talk to them and take the time to educate them, and it makes the process much smoother along the way.
