Hazardous Waste Disposal has become easy in San Carlos, California

ReThink Waste food scrap bucketRecycling has become more and more important on the mid-Peninsula and in Silicon Valley, as it has elsewhere in the country. Cities in California are mandated to reduce waste by large percentages in the upcoming years, and they are making it very easy for us to pitch in and do our part.

We're fortunate in San Carlos to have systems in place to make recycling very simple and safe. First it was plastics, glass and paper recycling, then green waste (including food scraps to feed these handy little buckets, then added to the yard clipping bin) and now--hazardous waste pick up!

The latest program I've learned about is the Door-to-Door Hazardous Household Waste program. The steps are clearly outlined on the RethinkWaste web site.

Some acceptable products include:

  • paint and painting supplies
  • insecticides and herbicides
  • fluorescent lights, tubes and CFLs
  • batteries
  • solvents
  • pesticides, non-empty aerosol cans

If you're a resident of San Carlos, Belmont, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, San Mateo or the West Bay Sanitary District all you need to do is call Curbside, Inc (1-800-449-7587) or email  hotmail@curbsideinc.com to get started.

What a great service this is--providing us with an easy, safe way to dispose of all those products lurking around our garage and storage areas!

Lottie....that's a terrific program....do you realize how difficult it is to dispose of items like paint cans....or old unused paint.....it's very expensive if you can find a way to do it....

We have good programs in place in the Twin Cities also. Costs can add up though when electronics are disposed of. But its time we did the responsible things and dispose of waste in a smart way. Your area is ahead of us as we have to drive a distance to recycle and it can take a few hours to drop off our disposables.

Lottie, my area could take a lesson from San Carlos.  I'm going to pass this along to Team Green, our local effort. Thanks.

Lottie, we have those programs in my area too. You are ahead of us with hazardous waste pick up. We have to take ours to a center.

Lottie,

Yes You do have an easy way for disposing of hazardous waste in your area.

That is something that we don't have readily available to us.

Barbara, this is a new program, and I'm delighted. My garage--like many people's--is full of old paint cans. Can't wait to avail myself of this easy program.

Paul, I think more cities will be starting programs like this. This pick-up service is new to us.

Hi Janice -- let's hope this program is successful here, then perhaps it will spread.

Joan, your situation is fairly common, I'm thinking. Our used to be that way; now it's even easier.

Judi, perhaps because we're so built up and urban, trash disposal is a bigger issue. I think changes will be coming to more and more communities.
