Habitat for Humanity Remodeling Vacant Homes

By
Home Inspector with Cape Coral Florida

I recently read that the Lee County Habitat for Humanity has transitioned temporarily from building new homes to rehabbing vacant homes left abandoned by homeowners. We have an abundance of these properties throughout Lee County. I thought I'd pass along the guidelines for the Habitat for Humanity program.

Here are the basic requirements to qualify for a Lee County Habitat for Humanity home:

  1.  Applicants must have worked or lived in Lee County for a year.
  2. You must be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien with your resident card.
  3. You must be married, single or divorced. If you are separated Habitat will accept your application after either a reconciliation or divorce.
  4. You must wait five years after a foreclosure or bankruptcy is finalized to apply.
  5. Your total household income must be a minimum of $15,000.

For more information on this program contact Habitat for Humanity at www.habitat4humanity.org or call (239) 652-0434.

Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization.  I shop at the local Habitat Restores for remodeling supplies.

Hi Pat, I'd been hearing about how wonderful our local thrift shop was and was just amazed at the quality of building materials they had.

Hi Sally & David, I hope this program spreads as well. We have an abundance of abandoned homes and I know other areas of the country do as well.

I helped build a Habitat for Humanity home here back in 2004, I think it was. Sadly, the home owners made the front page of the newspaper back in 2009. They couldn't pay the property taxes, so they got an equity loan, which they then couldn't pay, so the bank foreclosed on the home.

Just like free cars on the Oprah show a few years ago caused people to have to pay gift taxes or shot them into a much hire tax bracket, beware of anything that is free. In this world of ours, I don't think anything is free anymore.

Hi Russel, This is so true. I think a lot of the homes that are being remodeled are because of the circumstances with your Habitat for Humanity home.
