The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has released and interesting survey called the 2009 American Housing Survey. The survey highlights the characteristics of U.S. housing and how it has changed over the years beginning in 1973 till today.

Following is a quick list of findings:

• Almost every home in the U.S. has a complete kitchen with a refrigerator, sink and cooking stove or range.

• When it comes to cooking, electricity is the most common fuel used followed by piped natural gas.

• Sixty-six percent of U.S. homes have a dishwasher and fifty-one percent have an in-sink disposal.

• A clothes washing machine ranks high with 84 percent of U.S. homes having one and 81 percent have a dryer.

• It’s likely you will find central air in a recently built home since 89 percent will have it, but only 65 percent of all homes in general contain a central air system.

• You will find a smoke detector in ninety-three percent of homes but only 36 percent have a working carbon monoxide detector.

• Eighty-eight percent of homes get their water from a public or private company water system. The remainder use wells.

• Eighty percent of homes are hooked up to a public sewer system. Twenty percent use a septic tank, cesspool or chemical toilet.

• You will find a porch, deck, balcony or patio, in eighty-five percent of homes and 66 percent will have a garage or carport.

• Thirty-five percent of homes have a fireplace.
