Pretty As A Picture - Staging your Blog

A blog without a photo is like a flower without a bloom!

Here is a great blog by Geri Sonkin with great sources and tips...

Original content by Geri Sonkin

butterflyLate last night I was soaking up my last little bits of inspiration for the challenge ahead.  Luckily for me, one of my final stops was at the blog of Debra Davis, who shared not only her trepidation about the 30 in 30 challenge, but her excitement at having found a great resource for attractive graphics, most of which are offered free for any use and are in the public domain.  My natural inclination was to hurry over to the site to check out its offerings.  Thankfully I didn't, because when I visited there this morning I found it almost impossible to drag myself away to fulfill the obligations of the day.  A talented photographer with a generous spirit, Jon Sullivan is a computer programmer with a keen eye and a clearly artistic bent.

Aside from wanting to see it all and experience the world from Sullivan's perspective, I couldn't help but think how helpful this would be for all of us with lessremote photographic genius than C. Richard Weisser, Myrl Jeffcoat or Russel Ray, to name just a few of the folks here who delight us with their talent.  I've compiled a collection of his photographs to be used at a future date, but suddenly found myself thinking how different many of the information filled posts here in the rain would look if "staged" with attractive artwork to break up the wall of words we're too often confronted with.

Just like a home about to be put on the market, take a look at your offering before you click "post blog entry."  Is it dressed in its Sunday best? Does it have curb appeal? Will it make your visitor want more?  If the answer to any of this is no, take a moment and find just the right graphic to help tell your story and make us want to stay awhile.  We'll all be glad you did.

Thank you Cathy for the reblog.  A blog is much more interesting when photos are integrated.  A "picture is worth a thousand words".

Cathy, I am so bummed.  Just posted my blog without any photos.  I usually write my blog at night and my photos about Cedaredge Soda Fountain are on my desktop at the office.  Bummer - it would look so much better with the photos - think I will add photos in the morning.

Cathy -- thanks for reblogging this post ... I'm going to check out the link for graphics now.  It's so true, it's a real challenge to try to read a post that doesn't have photos or graphics to make it more interesting!

Nice re-blog Cathy.  I think pictures in the blog add some warmth and make the blog a bit more personal and interesting.

Howdy Cathy Lee!

For a while there I was unable to post photos.   I found that if I signed on to AR through Mozilla/Firefox the problem was solved.   Apparently the AR Gods have corrected the Internet Explorer issue and I can return to posting photos the old-fashioned way.

Anyway, I have a question:  How does one 'frame' a photo???

Many thanks!

(BTW your email address rejects my emails - or I'd write to you personally)

Yes, Anita-it does make it more personal and interesting!

Howdy Tom!! have you tried emailing since the AR Gods have fixed some things?? Let me know.

Use piknik to frame-it is so easy-call me and we can do it together if you can get me at my office-we can arrange a time.

I usually skip the blogs that are just all print...too much of a time investment.  I don't have the attention span to deal with it.

I don't think I have ever posted a blog without a picture. If I did it was rare. Pictures add so much. Thanks for the reblog!

Cathy - I agree.  I too usually skip over blog posts without photos.  A good resourse for stock photos is istockphoto.com.  You pay a small fee to use each photo but they have a huge library of photos.

Hi Cathy,

Pictures do make a world of difference on a blog, a book, a presentation, etc.  We are a very visual society and having a picture or two, to go along with the story always will grab the attention of the reader faster than a blog, book, presentation without!
