It is that time of the year again, and as the commercial says, "It's the most wonderful time of the year." That is the time when all the children in Michigan start back to school. This year school starts on Sept 2th. Several years ago the State Legislature mandated that school would start the day after Labor Day, in order to gain one more weekend for tourism which is a big industry in Michigan. Right now Michigan needs all the help it can get so that was fine.

My family and I live in Saline, Mi. Saline is located just 2 miles south of Ann Arbor, close to all the major cultural, educational and recreational centers but still maintaining its small town atmosphere. It has been the driving force of this small rural community for 100's of years.

The quality of education in Saline Schools has driven all the growth in Saline for the last 14 years. Matter of fact that has been the history in Saline since the one room school house. Education has always been a top priority. Under Michigan's state statute in the late 1800's, school children were only allowed to walk two miles to attend classes, so many rural one room school houses were spread out to comply with that statute.

In March I posted on the Weber-Blaess Schoolhouse that was restored in 2002, which the elementary children get to visit and experience what it was like to attend school in the year 1867. It is located on Woodland Dr and is a hallmark of remembrance for education in Saline.

Over the last one hundred plus years, Saline has continued to grow based on the quality of education that is provided to the students. There are currently 8 schools in the Saline School District, with over 5200 students enrolled. Saline Schools pulls in students from Pittsfield, Lodi, York, Saline, Bridgewater, and Freedom Townships.

There are three elementary schools in Saline housing grades 1-4. As soon as one was built we were in need of another one.

The Kindergarten is at Houghton Elementary, located at 555 Mills Rd. 734-944-8960. This school houses pre-school, kindergarten and young 5's.

Saline Middle SchoolSaline Middle School is comprised of grades 7-8 and is located in the Old High School. The middle school is located at 7190 N. Maple Rd. 734-429-8070. It was formally the old high school.

Saline High SchoolSaline High School is grades 9-12. This is the fourth year that the new high school has been open and it is state of the art. It is located at 1300 Campus Drive 734-429-8030.

Saline Area Schools is a wonderful district dedicated to it students and to their advanced learning opportunities. It is in partnership with the families, wonderful staff and teachers.

As my husband is fond of saying, "Saline parents are the most devoted dedicated and doting families in the Western Hemisphere."

Missy,

Our schools started this week. My daughter missed the first day due to the fact we came back from a wedding in NY on Mon. I forgot that my niece and nephew start after labor day.

Missy -Yes it is the time of year that parents look forward to sending the little ones back to school and some of the children are eagerly looking forward to going back.  It's the most wonderful time" was a really memorable commercial.

A very nice local post.

Rita, I do love it here, a great community to live in and the schools are top notch.

Chris, thanks :)

Ashley and Cyndee, I don't know how you do it, homeschooling with a career. I have tons of friends in Ann Arbor and Saline that homeschool and there are Friday classes where the mothers teach subjects that others aren't comfortable with. I tried it for 2 years when my oldest was starting, then number 2 came along and I said forget it. With 5 kids I couldn't have done it.

Kathy, yes tonight. Allyssa will be on the sidelines with her cheer outfit on, in her wheel chair. But, the pins come out on Sept 14th so we are excited.

Neal, yes the Midwest and Northern Schools start after Labor Day, I have always thought it was strange because all the sports start practise Aug 1st so you can't really go away anyway. But, I guess it helps the economy.

Jennifer, I loved it too.

Chris, :)

Thesa, I think tonights football game will make it more real for me.

Great post about Saline Schools in Michigan. WoW only 3 elementary schools? What is the population in Saline? That is a beautiful high school. Is Michigan a Home School Friendly state? It would make a great post about local recourses for homeschoolers in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Katerina

School started in S. Florida, Sept 20 - Now we (the parents) are on vacation....lol.  My daughter (sophomore in HS) was counting down the day a month in advance.  My lil one started Kindergarten, they are both quite happy to be in school. It's a win, win situation.

Missy - Hard to believe fall is just around the corner! Now that many are settling down from vacations, we will see more buyers making decisions. Many will make their decision based on schools alone.

They always do, don't they. But, we can't talk about them, they have to do it themselves.

Missy, schools here start this week.  Our legislature also made the change about school starting later.  We have lived here almost 11 years and this is the latest I ever remember schools starting.  Traditionally here in our school district graduations happen over the Memorial weekend but I can't see that happening with school starting so much later.  It will be interesting to see what happens next Spring.

You gave some great information on your school district by the way!!!
