I walked by the dryer again...looked at the door...and walked away. Eeeeesh. I thought to myself..."Later...yes...later". I have accomplished many things in my life and overcome dozens of obstacles...but this one thing still gives me pause. Crum...it's just a fitted sheet...but it still needs to be folded.
So...the self talk begins. "Just open the dryer door...get the sheet...and fold it, Silly!" A seemingly simple task...(for some)...but for me all it brings is total frustration. Is it because it's so clumsy? Or because there's no easy way to do it? Or...is it because it never folds perfectly into a nice square? My husband thinks it's the latter. He knows how I like to have my linens stacked nicely with all the raw edges to the back and...(if I have extra time)...colors arranged in a prism fashion.
Okay...before you think I am totally O.C....this is about the only area in my life that I am retentive. Look at the top my desk or any dresser drawer and you will know that I am far from it. Not sure where the sheet thing came from...but nonetheless...it's a challenge I face each week.
I had my "Aha!" moment when I finished folding the sheet that day...
"Now that wasn't so bad, was it, Claire?"
It really wasn't. So...the sheet wasn't perfectly square. And yes, it took a minute longer to fold it...and yes...I had to start over at least once. But...in the end...the sheet got folded. The earth didn't stop moving because of my angst...nor did anyone criticize my fold job. What did happen was...I wasted a few minutes of my valuable time worrying and contemplating. I know...it's just a few minutes...but over a year I will have wasted 104 minutes of my time just thinking about folding a fitted sheet. That's time that could have been invested in more important things...like ________________. (You fill in the blank).
If you are facing an obstacle today that always seems to eat your lunch...go on..."just fold the fitted sheet".
