Just what were YOU thinking when you built that?  

I showed a home last week that was built on 8 X 8 stilts.  The home owners later built on after the home was inspected years ago decided they were going to double their square footage by closing in the big crawl space.  They took untreated 4 X 4s and used them for floor joist thinking they would be strong or maybe they got a deal on them at a lumber yard.  To top that off they just put them in the dirt.  No insulation, no real siding just press board, wall board on the ceilings with all the tape joints cracked open and thought this was going to be ok. 

WHAT A STRUCTUAL NIGHTMARE under this nice home that would have probably sold by now.

What the heck are people thinking when they decide they are going to add on or finish the basement themselves and of course not take out a permit from the county?  Most of the time they are not thinking of the repercussions when they go to sell a home.  Are they thinking they will never sell and always own this home?  Things happen in life and you do end up selling and then you have a mess on your hands. Or you pass and your siblings have to deal with it.

I agree there are qualified craftsman who can do their own work and do a dam good job but not the majority of them.  There is way too many do it yourself programs on TV.

While you think you are saving money, your really wasting it.  Think of what will happen down the road when someone else owns the home. Think of the Real Estate Agent that now has to try to sell this property and must disclose what he knows about the home.  You are not saving money, you will lose it in the end.

I would not even think of listing this home, I would know too much.  I did call the listing agent and gave him more than feedback.  I told my clients in their best interest, unless they were willing to have a professional come in and rip all that out, they should not even consider buying it and we will look for something else.
