When Breath of Life Becomes Breadth of Life

Today was a day spent at the doctor's office with my Mom. She has pneumonia, got a couple of shots and a breathing treatment. She is breathing better now. The doctor wanted to put her in the hospital, but she refused. Spending time in the local hospital is a sure way to get sick. If you aren't sick when you go there, by the time you eat the food and spend the night, you will be sick. So she said as long as I was with her to help her, she would be ok.

My Mom's health has been steadily going down in the past few years and my time with her has increased. I cherish each minute we have together and know that each breath she takes is a struggle for her. She has COPD and various other issues. Breathing is a challenge but she is a fighter. She is the type of person to Mother and childtake care of others first and never think of herself. I have tried to step in and take care of her, but I know that she is really taking care of me. She doesn't want to be a problem for me. I try to express to her that she is not a problem, that it is a pleasure to share the time with her. You would have to know and understand this precious person.

I lost my Dad a few years ago. Mom and Dad had been married for 53 years. They were always together and shared every part of their life. They were and are great parents.

When you have a day of reflection on your life, and a day to wonder of the future, you understand how important each "breath" can be. Cherish them. You may take your own breath for granted, but don't take the "breath" of those you love for granted. Each breath is a measurement of the breadth of their life. Make it good. Make it filled with love. Make it cherished.

It's wonderful you can spend time with your mother--you will not regret this time of caring for her.

I would give anything to have a little more time with my mother.  Those hours spent together are a gift to you both.  Cherish them.  I know you do.

I love the title to your post and the article speaks well to that concept with what is going on with your mom. It's wonderful that you have some time to give back to your mom as she gave to you with your wonderful childhood.

Thank you Judi. Sometimes its harder to share personal things, but I feel everyone should cherish their time with their loved ones and sometimes we just need a little reminder.cher
