Take your shoes off or leave them on?

I guess I am reblogging this because I cannot believe that some of the comments were from people who didn't think she was trying to be "off the cuff." Seriously? Then she had to amend her post to deal with the humorless folks, too! Nutty. Plus, I like the 25 points. Got enough words yet? Oh yeah!

How many times have you been to your friends' house, ready for an enjoyable evening only to be told at the door by your smiling friend "take your shoes off"? Well, one of the dirty little secret of the carpet industry is just this...keeping your shoes off might actually result in you shortening the life of your carpet when compared to your guests wearing their shoes.

Here is why....going shoeless on carpets actually transfers bodily oils into the carpet fibers that over time cause dirt to attach to the carpet fibers, and even regular vacuuming and steam clean won't remove the oils. The results is that repeated use only builds up a mix of oils and dirt that eventually weakens carpet fibers, and yes, eventually shortening the true life of your carpet.

Now, usually for hardwood, the opposite is true.  Taking your shoes off will prolong the life of your hardwood as it substantially reduces scratches.

So the next time you visit a friend, and they ask you to "take your shoes off", look down at their floors first to see if they have carpet or hardwood.

Addendum based on comments - this was meant to be a bit off the cuff.  I'm not suggesting getting into an argument w/ your friends and certainly there are many cultural reasons for removing shoes and that trumps all.  Just trying to provide some advice to help you all preserve the life of your own floors.

I knew that was true about carpet and yes hard floors shoes off should be common sense.

Aaron - well I had no clue about being shoeless on carpet. I never wear shoes unless I go out so it's a non-issue for me. And I'm usually barefoot. Gonna checkout those comments.

Different cultures have different ideas about wearing shoes in the home.  I think that part of a listing agents duties is to inform the seller that their cultural ideals don't work well in the U.S.

On another note, its a legal liability.  I've been involved in multiple litigation cases involving realtors who have posted signs to remove your shoes only to have a client or guest trip, fall and in one case break a leg.  While performing ones duties with regard to employment it is in violation of OSHA rules and regs to work without proper foot ware.  If you're showing property or sitting an open house, you're working.  If you ask the termite inspector or home inspector or anyone else to remove their shoes you're at risk for personal injury litigation and or negligence.

Thank you for reblogging and for being empathetic.  It was obvious from some of the comments that people misunderstood me.  I guess I need to be a bit more clear in my writing.  And, the post was not meant to be about realtor showings - just tips to preserve your own floors.
