The more specific title might be, how to write a blog post. But Google gives twice as many results for How To Write A Blog- over 440 million actually, so that is the first tip.  To get your blog noticed, look for great words in your title, tags and content. Writing a blog post seems more intimidating than it has to be. And it is the reason most don't start a blog, or have one they don't use. There are plenty of resources and links to suggestions for writing ideas or what sort of photos to use. I'll go in a different direction here, by suggesting a few tips that most people don't think of.

Its All In The Title- The executive who green-lit the title The Shawshank Redemption is probably shagging golf balls at a golf course in southern California these days. A critically acclaimed movie, with great actors, that likely, would have done more box office with a smarter title. You only have so much time to grab a readers attention, and having a title that doesn't describe your post, or takes too long to say, isn't the best idea. Keep it simple, keep it on subject.

Talk About It- About fifty percent of the subjects I choose to write about, come from conversations I have. Everyday we communicate with family, colleagues, and strangers. There is a good chance we speak about our interests, and your blog is something you obviously find thought-provoking.

Cheating Isn't Always Bad- Cheating is probably the wrong word to describe what I suggest. Individuals have a hard time writing, because they don't use the tools at their disposal. Online help like Google and Thesaurus.com are wonderful resources for gathering information and making sure you don't repeat yourself. I google nearly every subject I post about, and make sure I look for different words to convey the same message. We tend to know the words we want to use, we just don't always remember them when the time comes. Thesaurus.com is one of my favorite websites.

Don't Be Afraid To Inject Some Levity- Blogs should be informative and compelling. But don't be afraid to display your sense of humor. No one wants to read depressing news or information on a regular basis. The best blogs I read contain a bit of sarcasm or wit. Don't be afraid to try a little humor from time to time

Be Consistent- This is the part most people don't like. But to have an effective blog, one should write several times a week, if not every day. It increases search engine optimization, and your regular readers will expect your posts and look forward to them. To read further on this subject, I've included a past blog post:http://3054e3b.activerain.com/post/1797751/how-to-post-to-a-blog-every-day

Musicians Do It, Why Can't You- Hip hop artists sample 60's and 70's music. Lady Gaga channels David Bowie and Madonna to name a few. Plagiarizing is flat out wrong. But looking to articles and other blogs you appreciate makes for great inspiration. You might find an idea or thought you can expand on.

Musicians Do It Part Two- The band Kiss is known for their make up and outrageous costumes. What they should also be known for, is their ability to market the same thing over and over with success. Most bands have a greatest hit album, or maybe two in a long career. Kiss managed to squeeze out twelve hits albums, most of which sold well. When you get enough posts under your belt, you can always go back and expand on your former work.

Learn To Love The List- The Top Five, The Top Ten.... There is a reason why you see so many lists these days. Whether you agree or disagree with the rankings that follow, people love to talk about lists. Talk show hosts know this, and so do magazine editors. Citizen Kane is better than the Godfather and Casablanca? Your posts will likely contain top tips, rather than opinions, but the point is, the mind is conditioned to react to lists. Use them.

It's A Group Thing- There is a reason why Weight Watchers has been around since 1963. Fad diets come and go, because losing weight is hard work. The thought of doing so in a group, makes the process less daunting. Keeping up with a blog isn't easy either. But getting immediate feedback from others is helpful, and the best way to get instant readers and meet new people.

Differentiate Your Work- Most of all, be different than the other people blogging on the subject you choose. Perform a search on a subject, and you will garner a boatload of results. In a world, with access to so much information, it is more important than ever, to cut through the clutter.

In conclusion, choose an eye catching title. Call on real world conversations to inject in your writing. Use resources available to you, and put a twist on others work. Try a consistent theme to your blog. Reach out to others, and above all, enjoy what you do.

Scott,

It is a simple thing. You sit to a computer, get a great title, and in an hour (maybe less, and maybe more) get a blog. It  is like magic.

There are people who do it wonderfully, there are people that do it regularly, and ther eare people that would not do it.

The myth that without blogging we can't do business is just a myth. There are people who do a lot of business and they do not do any of the Social media.

That's life

Hi Scott.  Great blog.  I also suggested it as a feature.  I think you are so right abt the title (oh, and ironically, I think abt the mistake they made on Shawshank's title often- I'm a marketing person so I often think abt that stuff).

I can really do a better job on some of my titles.  And. last couple of days came across some great info on Active Rain University and an old post from Brad Andersohn - I'll try to find.  Apparently, you should repeat title in first line of post and add location to the title.

Scott - If there is one thing that stands out to me is The TITLE. If you don't have a title that attracts and makes an impact on your blog you are all for not.

I actually learned this on a blog I recently
wrote . The first title that I had was not worthy of my very first feature. Someone from the community picked up on it and said it would help if I changed the title and WALA. Feature.

So giving thought to what you want and keeping it simple but have it grab you.

Actually, Stephen King's original title for his book was, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." The only reference to Hayworth in the movie was the giant poster of her that covered the hole that was being dug to the outside. I always thought that was a pretty intriguing title, even if it is not "simple." You've gotta check it out and see what it is about.

Thanks for a really good post!

Great post Scottie! Well thought out and to the point. How long did it take you to write it?

4:42pm • #63

Interesting Scott!  You wrote:

"The more specific title might be, how to write a blog post. But Google gives twice as many results for How To Write A Blog- over 440 million actually, so that is the first tip.  To get your blog noticed, look for great words in your title, tags and content."

Maybe I am confused.  Are you saying to write:

For generality (greater numbers, About 912,000 results, More competition) - "How To Write A Blog"

or

write for a niche (less numbers, About 204,000 results, less competition) - "How To Write A Blog Post"

I would think going after the long tail would better serve a person?

FYI - I used quotes, when I googled that - so with out the quotes your number is correct of "About 439,000,000 results"

4:48pm • #64

Scott,

Thanks for the information. It will definitely come in handy. I wrote my first blog yesterday....and through my ranting and venting it tuned out to be a feature! Everyone told me what an accomlplishment that is....and I was thinking, "hmmm, how'd that happen"? I just wrote about something that meant something to me. I guess it helps when we have a passion for the point we're making.

Now for the next step...what to do next??? Being new on AR and having read SO much about social networking, blogging etc, it can be overwhelming to say the least. It's been on my "to do" list for about 3 years!  I guess it's one of those things that you learn along the way. Time will tell.

Thanks again for sharing your advice and tips. If you've got more to share I'm all ears.

Thanks for the input guys. To answer a few questions

Keith- I like the general search titles. Maybe I'm off, but getting your name and blog to several hundred million has to help with seo. That 439 million was pretty wild. I'll have to go back to see where this post placed

Lyn- You are right, guess you can't challenge living people. Although Bowie and Madonna can look a bit dead at times

Keith- I'm only up to page two on google..but I keep fighting. I too, used to have to put real estate after my name to get anywhere close to page one

9:58am • #67
497,765 Points 103 Featured Posts Outside Blog Attended Rain Camp Called Shot Master

Scott- You are actually a little off on the SEO end.  Just because there are 439 million results doesn't mean you get better exposure.  It actually means it is a higher competitive term that could take much longer to show up in the rankings.  When you actually look at the amount of traffic the terms get, How to write a blog gets 22,000 search results per month.  How to write a blog post gets 3,600 per month.  So you have 439 million options fighting for 22,000 searches.  So the competition is through the roof difficult.  Usually if you aren't within the top 5-10 results on Google you aren't going to see a ton of traffic on a post unless it is inside a network like AR where the members come by.

Here's the second thing regarding Googling and names: While it is great to have your name all over Google, how many buyers/sellers google your name on a regular basis?  Unless you are some sort of celebrity, it isn't going to bring much business.  Consumers are searching for terms like "homes in Tulsa with Sidewalks"  and when they find you that way, it results in business.  if you don't believe me, go read Lori Cain's recent post about the phone call.  I'd put a link here but that breaks TOS.

Jeremy- Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure how the google results worked, but your explanation makes sense. I'm taking the AR social media course to get a grasp on seo, keywords, and any other tips.

Googling my name is just a barometer. I've acquired some *homes in .....* domain names, and have been working on a website, and some localism posts in the interim. I didn't go over it in this post, but my long term goal this summer was to get my blogging down, while building a website and learning the ropes. AR has meant great savings and I plan to come back with a web strategy
