What to expect

Joining the Be The Match RegistrySM is easy. Patients need donors who are between the ages of 18 and 60, meet the health guidelines and are willing to donate to any patient in need.

When you come to a donor registry drive, we will explain what it means to join the registry, help you understand your commitment, answer your questions and help you through the process.

All you need to do is:

  • Complete a registration form with contact information, health information and a signed agreement to join the Be The Match Registry. To help you complete the form, bring along:
    • Personal identification (such as a driver's license or passport)
    • Contact information for two family members or friends who would know how to reach you in the future if your contact information changes.
  • Give either a swab of cheek cells or a blood sample to be tissue-typed. We'll use the results to match you to patients.
  • Please also consider making a financial gift to the Be The Match Foundation. The total cost to add a new member to the registry is about $100. Your generous contribution in any amount is tax-deductible and helps make it possible for others to join.

That's it! You'll be listed on our registry where patients turn when they need a matching donor.

Thanks for posting this. I've been meaning to look into this in my area and joining the registry since I have a fairly uncommon blood type.

Go here... http://www.marrow.org/JOIN/Join_in_Person/index.html  and you can enter your zip code.  The site will then show you all bone marrow drives within a designated radius.  A donor saved my wife's life almost two years ago.  Please do donate!  You won't regret it.

I won't be in CA but I'll check out the website and see how it all works.  Does it hurt?  :)

The fantastic thing is that neither the swabbing of cheek cells to enter the registry nor the actual procedure (stem-cell harvesting) if you are ever found to be a mathch are painful.

The cheek swab just involves some very large cotton swabs swabbed against the inside of the cheeks.  No pain.

Donation requires stem-cell harvesting.  Essentially your blood is drawn out of one arm, passed through a machine that harvests some of your stem cells, and then returned to you via your other arm.  Hurts about as much as giving blood.  Painful bone marrow aspirations with a needle are generally not necessary these days (although in some rare cases a donor may be asked to follow this procedure rather than stem-cell collection).
