Panera Bread Co., a soup and sandwich chain is opening a store in Fayetteville North Caorlina. Fayetteville will one of 5 locations to get new stores in the state.

The Cumberland County BRAC Taskforce has hired The Republik, an independent business in Durham, N.C., to handle an internet ad effort consisting mainly of banner and viral ads, Web site development and blog seedings.

The budget - $500,000. Wow!

Why? To draw active soldiers, DoD employees and their families from other bases to relocate to Fort Bragg which I thought was a matter of military orders but I guess I'm missing a piece of the puzzle.

"The Republik combined a strong understanding of what Fayetteville, N.C., has to offer military residents, along with an outsider's objectivity. And their case histories show the development of measurable and effective plans of attack," said Cumberland County BRAC chairman Jim Konneker.

Agency CEO Robert Shaw West added, "No military community in the country has ever done anything as proactive as this. Fayetteville is saying flat out, 'We love soldiers and we want every one of you.'"

Hear! Hear! Soldiers, Airmen, Seamen, and Marines welcome! To that point I whole-heartedly agree.

Fort Bragg will soon absorb about 25,000 Army personnel and support staff currently stationed in Atlanta.

Finally! A Panera in Fayetteville.

I'd love to know more about The Republik's work with BRAC. Do you happen to still have that news release?

I have 2 stories probably both built from the same press release. I'm confused as to how we can attract more troops with an ad campaign since they usually go where their orders tell them to go. What are your thoughts?

Hmm ... that is confusing, I understand that the county is trying to persuade the troops to move their families into Fayetteville (rather than Moore County or Hoke, for example).

But from that article, it seems like The Republik believes it is responsible for moving troops into Fort Bragg. They are going to be astonished at their success if that's the goal they've set! (Maybe that's the point? To take credit for something that was going to happen anyway? That would be incredibly shady.)

I had not thought about it from that angle. I hope the city/county wouldn't spend a half a million to attract an outcome that's going to happen anyway. Maybe the plan is to try and persuade decision makers (general officers and above) or maybe it's simply justification for an image campaign.
