senior texting

So who's hitting Facebook and other social media sites in larger and larger numbers?  The Pew Research Center's Internet and America Life Project reports that 92% of those between 50 to 64 and 89% of those 65 and older send and read email.  It's just a click away to other social media avenues ... and it looks like those "seniors" are making the click in ever growing numbers.

Sarah Lundy's article in the Orlando Sentinel  "Seniors fast finding a home on Facebook"  (and re-printed in the Stockton Record on August 30) highlights many of the reasons why seniors are finding social media a useful tool.  She further reports, based on the Pew study, that with adults 50 to 64 use has jumped by 88% in the past year ... for those 65 and older it has doubled.  The Center report reflects several factors causing older adults to log in:  1) It helps bridge the generation gap, 2) It reconnects to people in their past,  and 3) older adults living with chronic diseases are more likely to find support groups online.

Seniors reading Facebook are less likely to comment than the younger generations.  So the next time you are planning on making a racy comment in your Facebook feed - remember, lurking in the shadows might just be.... Your Grandmother!

It is the way we keep track of our kids and grandkids all over the country. Most of us "oldsters" have been using computers for 20+ years.

Younger and older. My 4 year old is PC savvy and can move a mouse with the best of them. I also have an 82 year old client who only communicates via e-mail.

Michael - staying relevant is not a trend, but a necessity ... and a great side benefit is staying connected to those who matter most to us.  Thanks for commenting

jack,

Very encouraging post. That's my age group, and now I know how to make my wife learn FB. Our grandson is out to college, his first time away from home, and she would love thhe idea of watchhing him. For that she would learn not only FB, but everything else there.

And after she masters the art of FBooking (can we say it this way?), then she would teach me.

Thanks for a golden idea. I "suggested" it on behalf grandmothers and grandfathers

The boom on facebook in this age category is because so many people want to keep in touch with children and grandchildren. But, not all in the 20 and under age group want to be Facebook "friends" with their grandparents. Not just because it limits their comments, but they also have to worry about posts to their wall from friends. As my 18 year old nephew told me, "Facebook isn't a place to talk to family and I feel a little awkward having my aunt on facebook".

Just think of all the widows and widowers whose children live far away. In years past, they were isolated. Now... can make friends and connect with people all over the world.

As for kids being worried about what Grandma will see...My policy is don't do or say things that will embarrass you if Mom or Grandma - or your dad, grandfather, sister, brother, spouse or child sees it or hears about it.

In addition, kids should be worried about what future employers might see. Right now about 42% say they check on potential and current employees on line. And once in cyberspace, the things you post can be there forever.
