LOL: Laugh Out Loud, or Lots of Love (bless your heart...)?

When I was a kid, my sister, bless her heart, was always telling me what to do and who to hang out with!  She subscribed to Mark Twain's theory of change: "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits." (lol)

Bloggers often use "LOL" when commenting.  (I see "bless your heart" less often.)  Both LOL and BYH serve a useful linguisted function--they allow the speaker to opinionate without offending.

Southerners (I hail from SC) can get away with the most outrageous comments by inserting that little magic phrase: "bless 'er heart."

I overheard my sister's real estate agent friend comment "That boy is a couple of bottles short of a six-pack, bless 'iz heart, but I love him!  We're looking at ten more houses tomorrow."  (lol)

Which brings me back to blogges using LOL.  Wikipedia cites "LOL." It favors "Laugh Out Loud."  LOL.com has built a business model on Laugh Out Loud jokes.   (Go ahead, click the link.  You want to, don't you?)  But Wikipedia also lists a secondary use:  "Lots of Love," which predates the internet, and seems (to me, at least) to be the preferred usage in comments on Active Rain.

It's the one I prefer. (lol)

Hi Mike,
You are right!  It is a term we (Southerners--I'm from NC) use to excuse our comments at times but also to sympathize.  I think my Grannie uses that term in every conversation she has.  LOL (laugh out loud or lots of love) fits here.  I enjoyed your post.

Mike - great reminder - as the saying goes "Live, Love, Laugh" - while laughing is important, love is not-an-option.  Our friends add those wonderful giddy words "bless 'er heart" at the end of just about every sentence.  Love it!

PS. Love the picture...was it staged or lucky?

My Grandmother was a true Florida cracker.  Grandpa used to drive cattle across Florida.  Whenever Grandma would pass a rumor about a neighbor she would always whisper.  She would do this even though we seated inside the house.

She'd lower her voice while saying, "You know, I heard that the Silas's were having money trouble."

We could hardly hear her, bless her heart. LOL

 Cynthia, thanks for commenting!

Calie, you're SO right; love is NOT an option.  Thank you!

Joan, the picture was staged with an OPEX sales associate and friend in Denver.  Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Dan, LOL

Mike, I told someone recently and I think it was on AR, so I hope it wasn't you and I'm repeating myself.  But I thought for a short time that LOL meant lots of love.  So I would finish my emails to friends and family with LOL.  I found out the hard way that LOL actually means, laughing out loud when I sent an email to a fried telling them how bad I felt about their accident and ended it with LOL.  Talk about a faux paux!  Let's just say, "I had some 'splainin' to do, Lucy"!

One of the funniest comedians I ever saw talked about the Southern euphemism, bless their hearts.  She said you could use it to get away with saying nearly anything.  Her example was, "a thought in that girl's head has about about as much chance as a bee-bee making it safely across an 8 lane highway during rush hour...bless her heart!  Yup...that softens it.

Mike, I have to say, I really enjoy reading your posts.  When I first came across an email that had LOL in it (a couple years ago), the person who sent me that email, well let's say, she used that LOL a lot.  It took me 3 months to finally get the courage to ask her what that meant. Meanwhile I was trying to figure it out, it was goofy what I came up with.  "laughing on life" or "lending our lunch" or "losing our lights" or "leaping on logs".  Yeah, I know, nothing that really made any sense.  Asking is always easier than guessing.

You have me laughing right now, because I started putting the words from your story into a different order.  How about Losing Our Lunch!

That's funny, Mike. You've taught me two new things today. LOL (lots of love) and BYH. I'm still in the habit of using LOL to suggest laughter!
