Rountree Integrated Solar Home, Westport, Ct.
John Rountree's Solar home in Westport, Ct. has been able to combine today's building technology with the charm and character of a 1910 Westport farm house. The house has a fully integrated roof solar system that provides most of his electricity and hot water. The Schuco "Synergy Roof" system combines Photo Voltaic (PV) and solar water heating along with a solar thermal recovery all in one design. Solar PV panels if they get to hot become less productive and that is why they are a couple of inches off the roof so they can cool down. In Rountree's design the panels are built into the roof with the air movement contained under the roof hooked into ducts and fans. With this system you can control the amount of air movement for ultimate photo Voltaic production. In the summer he vents the excess air heat outside and in the winter the system circulates this extra heat through the house.
Rountree's Westport home also features many other green practices such as;
- Bamboo flooring
- Energy Star appliances
- 19 SEER Carrier "Hybrid Heat" heat and cooling system
- Compact fluorescent lighting (CFL's)
- High performance foam insulation and recycled cotton insulation
- Wittus efficent wood burning stove
- Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system
