Media woes

If your market if like the average Real Estate market these days, advertising funds are tight for Brokerages, and most seem to be scaling back on the scope of their advertising.  This summer when the account executive from our local paper called to talk about ad placement and mentioned that almost all agencies have cut back on the advertising this year, I suggested to him that perhaps it was the media that is aiding in the negative talks surrounding property sales and that perhaps they were responsible for the nervous tension found in our market these days. While the paper is intent on publishing hard facts such as higher # of listings this year vs. previous years, I asked him why the paper didn't break out "condo" listings from regular residential listings?  Condos have flooded our market in the past three years, and of course, their sales are suffering much more than SFR listings. I felt that this should have been address rather than painting the impression that ALL sellers are desperate and that our market is flooded with listings.  Condo listings perhaps, but only slightly higher than average SFR listings in my opinion.  So it seems to me that the media has shot themselves in the foot, so-to-speak, and frustrating many Realtors' efforts in the process. The likely outcome?  Angry Realtors and a general reluctance to advertise with "the bad guys" who -so easily with the printing of one days' paper - send our market into upheaval.  Let's hear it for some positive news from the local media!!!

If only the SALES departments of the media would talk to the CONTENT EDITORS, we might not have this problem. Unfortunately, they are usually on different planets.

I wish there was something else they would choose to talk about. I believe that they should view numbers every where before they open mouth and insert foot. But they get to get away with that crap and we must be on the up and up of what we talk about or we could be in big trouble.

I agree with both of you!  I guess that's just the way the media community works right now.  But at least my ad exec. understood, and mentioned a story about another paper, a few years back, running an awful story on car dealerships and every single car dealership that was advertising with them withdrew their ads for a while in protest. Now that was smart!

Now is the time to hire a PR professional. You need someone who can arrange for "talking points" with local media. You have to get your message out, and this investment could be better than any ads you could purchase.

While I no longer do PR, I can certainly make recommendations -- particularly in the metropolitan-Atlanta area.

One of the local papers in a small town nearby me even went so far as to put a picture of a FSBO sign when they featured a front page story on real estate - do you think that they FSBO site has spent any money on advertising in the paper.  If I was a realtor in that town I would probably never advertise in that paper again.

As being similar to Diane and having worked for and with the media as a former journlist and public relations professional - there are a lot of things to keep in mind and a good PR person for a BOARD that gets worked down would be optimal. If we were all saying the same "basic" things then it gets better.

Of course, I say that now, but any e-mail I get from CW is seen as being part of the "save us" propoganda -- and you don't want that mentality.

We've been forunate in Delaware, Ohio. The local paper did a foreclosure series but it wasn't as imbalanced as so many others out there.

A lot of brokerages are spending more of their money on the internet. Print is just a way to drive traffic there.
