Questions to Ask A Contractor Before You Hire Him/Her
Are you thinking about buying a home using a 203K loan or doing some renovations to your existing home? Then you will want to interview contractors before just hiring anyone.
- How long have you been in business? What did you do before?
- What work are you licensed to do, ie. electrical, hvac, plumbing etc?
- What kind of work do you specialize in?
- Have you done a similar job before?
- How long do you think this job will take?
- Do you have any pictures of work you have completed?
- Will you have your own crew or will you sub contract some or all of the job?
- How will you deal with health and energy efficiency aspects of the job?
- How and when do you clean up?
- What kind of warranty do you offer and what does it cover?
- Do you carry workers' compensation and liability insurance? Are you bonded?
- Will you pull all the required permits (e.g., building, plumbing, electrical)?
- Do you have references? It's ok to ask the contractor for the names, addresses and phone numbers of other homeowners that they have done work for.
- And, probably one of the most important things to ask is whether or not they plan to work on your house every day and if not why not.
