This great big, once majestic elm tree used to live at the edge of the field, very close to the farm house. Unfortunately, it died as a result of too many years of caterpillar infestation.

It was taken down our of fear that Hurricane Earl might knock it down and perhaps into the house. It is gone, but not forgotten.

Nathan and Brennan worked hard, and had to employ the big loader for the final push. Here they are posing with their trophy. Nice job guys!

elm tree killed by caterpillars

On the eve of Hurricane Earl, it is eerily quiet outside. There is not even a leave rustling in the trees. The calm before the storm.

I imagine that there will be numerous power outages and much clean up once the storm passes.
Hope everyone stays safe, and the damage to your property is non-existent or minimal.

Judy...

I hate to see an old giant succumb, but this is a great and very interesting photo. Now get yourself inland away from the storm and stay safe!

Barbara - I am pleased to hear that the predictions are placing the storm a littler further out to sea vs. yesterday's forecast.

Richard - That tree was so beautiful. Every year, I hoped for a miracle that the leaves would come back.

Judy, I hope all will be well on the Cape, My folks are out there too. The Last time I was down to visit them we took a walk down to the marshes and caught a shot of this dead tree...I wonder if it was the same one.

Judy ~  I am glad to see that the tree is down and that it can not cause any damage.  Stay safe and we hope Earl stays as far away from MA and NH as possible.  We will have to keep an eye on the weather channel.

Judy, those old trees get to be like old friends. There is a huge old Copper Beech in front of my old house in Winchester, MA. The people who live there now bought it from my parents when we left oh so many many years ago. I stopped a few years back to look at the house, she came out and invited me in. I had to stop and put my hand on the tree. It was like seeing an old friend after too many years. A flood of memories came back.

Steve - No, this tree was in Middleboro. I just learned that dead trees may not be as dangerous as live ones in a wind storm. They weigh less. I guess that makes sense.

Joan - The storm may get downgraded, I hope it keeps weakening.

Andrea - Way back, the horses used to like standing under the shade of this tree. It had quite a canopy. I also remember a dead tree that had fallen down close to this one that we used for a boost to get on the horses. We used to ride them bareback all the time, no stirrup to help you up. It was either 10 fingers, a tree, or the stone wall. Yes, many memories surrounding that tree.

I see the storm weakening as it heads your direction.  I am hoping the colder waters diminish the power.  My mother in law lives in Harwichport and so I keep an eye on the area.  I bet the boys loved using the machinery.  Enjoy your weekend and my your storm be small.

Hi Judy ~ So sad! I absolutely hate seeing trees of any size cut down - never mind a majestic tree like this.

Larry - I thought I responded to you, but I must not have clicked the submit button. The storm was VERY small and we were very grateful. The boys alway enjoy playing with the machinery! LOL

Liz - It was a beauty. Those darn gypsy moths got the better of this giant. There wasn't anything we could do to save it and it was a little too close to the house so it needed to be taken down.
