If you haven't already been you must check out the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area.

I went for the first time today to my local Plano, TX ReStore , which recently opened last April 2007, and found a treasure trove of items that are useful for my staging business as well as my own home.

This store had furniture, home decor, lighting fixtures, switch plates, surplus lumber in , flooring, paint, doors, knobs, appliances, the list goes on and on!  Home builders and contractors routinely have surplus from their jobs and this is a great place to donate to should your company wish to consider this worthy cause.

Not only is it a great find for home stagers and home owners, but it also benefits a great cause, Habitat for Humanity , their motto is:

Everyone deserves a decent place to call home.

Some houses we work on leave furniture behind and I've been in situations where we had to call a resale shop to come pick up these items.  According to a recent commenter on this blog, Judy Kincaid, the items donated must be under 10 years old and in good condition (I would think that wood furniture in good shape may be an exception but you may want to ask you local store first.) ReStore does pick up large items.  They have trucks that will come pick up your donated items should you need that service.

Check out their link for more information and a store near you.

There are also many volunteer opportunities available should you be interested for yourself or your students over 16 who may need service hours for their school.  Call your local store or visit their website for details and sign up for the free newsletter as well.

Sue - that's a bit of a drive, I'd call first to make sure that they have what you may be looking for, you  can also post your business cards there as well - I asked and they did have a bulletin board

Tammy - I'm going to look into the other stores as well - I think it may become one of my favorites too

Karen -- Thanks for reminding me that I haven't visited the store near me in quite a while.  Another thing that is nice about these stores is that they stress that the the donated items should be less than 10 years old.  Therefore, often times their furniture items are newer and in better shape than what you would find at Goodwill or Salvation Army and with better prices.

Karen,

This is a super tip!  I did not know about this resource at Habitat for Humanity.  What a great place for my sellers to donate things as they pack up for their move.

Judy - I didn't realize that they asked for items under 10 years - that's good to know and really that's a great requirement -"gently used" after 10 years of wear and tear won't usually fit the bill for resale - unless it's an antique I guess.

Pat - great suggestion for your sellers! But as Judy mentioned - make sure to tell them the furniture has to be gently used and under 10 yrs. old(I would think that applies to the sofas and upholstered chairs more than wood furniture)

Karen,

Visited friends last night who will be moving in 6 months, giving away some furniture in the attic, I looked at the things with a new eye, there were some items that would be great for staging.  I would not have thought of that before reading your article here.

Pat, glad to hear that.  Are you going to be the recipient of some of that excess furniture? That would be nice.

Hi Karen. It was great to stumble upon this post. I did some fundraising  for Habitat a few years back and my sister did some hands on stuff with them. I love their cause & mission. Thanks for sharing the news about their ReStore!

hi marti - Habitat is a great organization and our local staging group is working closely with the Dallas area HH for a week of volunteer staging - the community areas of their offices and an actual recipient's home - kinda like a mini extreme makeover and "reveal".  It's going to be so great to share that experience the week of Sept. 9 -16th.

Hi Karen D! The inventory changes so check back - I spent way too much $$ the day I went but know it's for a good cause and will serve me well too - how could I resist??  I plan on donating at some point too which further justifies my purchases....
