Everybody knows in our "don't offend anyone" kind of society we live in today, that you're not supposed to call anyone a name.  It isn't considered nice and it might hurt their feelings.

But I can't help it.  I'm a "name it" kind of a guy.  I guess this is a bad habit I picked up when I was in elementary school.  Or maybe it comes from watching one of my favorite movies, "A Christmas Story" too much.  Remember this little piece of dialog from the movie?

Schwartz: Hey, smart a$$. I asked my old man about sticking your tongue to a flagpole in the winter, and he says that it'll freeze right to the pole, just like I told ya.
Flick: Ah, baloney. What would your old man know about anything?
Schwartz: He knows, because he once saw a guy stick his tongue to a railroad track on a bet, and the fire department had to come get the guy's tongue off the track, because he couldn't get it off.

SnakeIn Real Estate, I often find myself naming houses.  For example, I can still vividly recall the "Snake House."  That was the vacant house I showed a couple of summers ago that had a big 6 foot long black snake curled up in the toilet.  Yep, that was a fun showing.  And recently there was the "Tragic House."  This was a vacant, unfinished house I showed not long ago that had the markings on the floor for the carpet and tile, unfinished kitchen cabinets sitting around, wires poking out of the walls, a ton of builder's trash in the garage and a dead bird lying on the floor.  You felt sorry for the house as it just sat there, neglected and empty.  (Don't lecture me about feeling sorry for the builder - I don't know him.  I know his left behind house!)

I will forever remember my "First Real Estate House."  This was the very first house I ever sold in Real Estate, way back in 2007.  The buyer did no inspections, purchased with cash and closed quickly.  I thought if Real Estate was that easy that I had picked the right career move for sure!  There are other names I've used in regards to houses too like "The Donkey House," (where a cute donkey lives), "The Country House," "The New House," "That Pink House," "The Golf Course House," "The Hill House" and on and on.

The Texting QueenIf we're honest with ourselves, we have to admit that we name people too.  Greg Nino recently wrote a post about his experience with this.  In my part of the world, we have "The Text Queen."  She's the Realtor you can only get hold of by texting her.  We also enjoy the antics of "That Guy."  You know him too.  He's the one who, when his name is mentioned, everyone goes, "Oh, THAT Guy!"  I find myself being jealous of "The Builder Agent" because she does so much new construction business.  But I am NOT jealous of "The Foreclosed Lady" because she is grumpy, hard to reach and obviously over stressed.  There is one person I chase after a lot and that is "The Big Dog."  I want to be him/her someday!

Sometimes I wonder what my "pet" name is among the local Real Estate community.  I hope it is something that reflects the kind of person I want to be rather than the kind of person who I wouldn't want selling Real Estate to my mother.

I hope I can live up to that.

I am a name kind of gal myself, but it is with people! I have a nickname for everone in my life! My husband has many, one of them being Jackson....his name is Steve. Don't ask why...it just happened! My god daughter is Boogaloos, another niece Lovey...I could go on and on!

I really enjoyed reading this Bob. I was trying to set up an inspection for a client this week and left 3 voice mails over 2 days with no reply. His Realtor said he responds better to texts. Low and behold, he texted me back within minutes. I realize that I don't always like to have to check voicemails, particularly, if I just missed the call and am calling back while someone is leaving a message.

Anyway, we inspectors have some terms for houses we inspect.  When they're in great shape, I don't have to name them. I just feel relieved. When they're bad, they can be labeled a "P.O.S. House" :)

It is unfortunate that we have become so politically correct [at least in public] that anything other than neutral opinions or ideas are the only acceptable ones.

Funny how you name houses. In our town there was a house known as the rat house, for obvious reasons. The story behind the story was a sad one. Anyway, everyone knew it as the rat house. It was eventually torn down, rats eradicated and a new home was built in it. None of the Realtors knew the proper physical address but had to be very careful not to say "Oh, the old rat house". LOL

We do have to be careful with our speech but we do label and profile and it seems some of that is acceptable as long as the word police say it is.

You would get along just fine with my broker! He has nicknames for everyone and everything. The hardest part about going to work for him was keeping track of his nicknames. One day he asked me to get on my "fancy Dan" and get some information from "Bobo". Okay..... Now I know a "fancy Dan" is my computer and "Bobo" is an agent who used to work in our office.

I just realized how many houses I've named. I hadn't thought about it before. As always Bob, you make us think in a different direction. I love it.

Bob - I love it!  I too have nicknames for both people and inanimate objects...each of my kids has about 5 different names and some of my favorite houses have been "the castle", "the birdhouse house", the dream house" and "the roller coaster house".  Have a great weekend!

Bob seems like of lot of us name houses - I've been doing it since 1987.  Especially when I'm out with clients we'll all think of a name for the house so they can remember it!  It works everytime and it's fun.  I kind of enjoyed your way back in 2007 house - wow - that's not that long ago.  You are an awesome agent and I'd hire you in a hearbeat. You are the type of agent I vision joining our team!  And - there are many great AR members I feel the same way about.

Hmmmmm what should name should I give you????? I'll think on that one!  What fun :)

Enjoy!

Ahhh… The Christmas Story… an annual tradition at my home every Christmas. (And you nailed the dialog between Schwartz and Flick!)

Which means, of course, to me you’ll forever be the real estate guy who loves ‘The Christmas Story,” …and a kindred spirit I can relate to. :)

I love this! My hubby always wants to know a little bit about my clients and then promptly files them by his own "made up" name ... I had one client a while back that always called me "Mom," so he's "Mom" to my hubby (LOL!!), and then there's the "reluctant husband" client and the "karaoke" client, etc. etc. The tough part is that when I say I'm running out to a client's house, etc., I have to remember what the heck he's named them so I can tell him where I'm going!

I have one guy I call "Boo" because he got cold feet about an issue on a house that had been there for a really long time.  He eventuall bought and is incredibly happy there.  I still bit my tongue when I see him.  Please Frank, not call him Boo!

I also had "the house that won't sell."  I liked it because I was doing so many open houses that I met lots of people even though they didn't want to buy the house.  It did eventually sell.  I must admit, it made me sad.

Yes I agree as I am probably never politically correct and really I don't care. Names are part of this or any other business. I walked through 2 in. of what I thought was water to view a home for a client last fall. Problem was it wasn't water but sewage and since this was a foreclosure the lights did not work. Trust me this was not a lot of fun.. But The old snake in the toilet trick I think tops everything I have heard of ...

Nestor is also a name it guy. If people hurt my feelings, that is my problem, not theirs. If I allow my feelings to be hurt by someone talking to me or about me, then I have just given them power over me. I learned this lesson very well being in my past marriage of 20 years with domestic violence.I allowed someone to control my self esteem. I have learned a lot. I don't think that name calling gets us far in communication but I also believe that people can say whatever they want to say. I don't like word police.   Nestor is so opposite of that but he does call it like he sees it.

A timely post, as our Society becomes increasingly Orwellian.

Call it like you see it, speak your mind, name it what you want to name it.

I nickname people and houses too, and sometimes it's hard to remember their given names, because I use their "nickname" so much!  Years ago I worked with a guy who had neighbors with the last name of "Kiester", they nicknamed the owners "Fanny" and "Hiney" and had to be careful not to slip in their presence!

I nickname houses as well.  I used to use "nicknames" as a memorization technique but then realized I might get myself in trouble and call someone by their nickname and they would think I'd lost my mind.  Now I concentrate on remember real names.

You just gave me the heebie jeebies with the snake house. I remember being chased by a black racer when I was little. Seriously, it CHASED me. I never ran so fast in my whole life. LOL. I can laugh about it now, but I will probably have a nightmare about it tonight. Thanks Bob! :O

It does help when you name houses when you are touring several in a day. BTW, I would refer my mother to you but I don't think she would consider moving to OK. Sorry.

Bob,

I suppose that happens a lot, but usually only with characters who are memorable and stand out in some way. If there's no name at all, that's not good.

Hey Bob!  I am from Tulsa too!  I know the McGraws and what a great company you are working for.  Pete McGraw is a sweetheart!  Anyway I am into name calling too, I just used to do it with my patients like the brain trauma, the lung transplant.  It is good to this because that way we get to remember everything we associated with them and with a fun name.  I think you are funny!  My mom just sold her property she lived in for 43 years off of Florence by the lake where the guy used to put up a Bilgillion Christmas Lights.  Her house was built by my dad in the 50's his name was Cecil Stanfield.  Anyway if the closing doesn't go thru I will keep you in mind for her.  She did it for sale by owner.

Look forward to usiing Active Rain!

Very good post Bob....

It is the American way to nick-name someone or something. It is the negative way to make fun of someone or something. Remember the rule..... When you speak of others (or something).....you speak of yourself too! BTW, in college, we came up with names that helped us remember things for the tests and exams....worked every-time.....thank you

I do think we tend to remember houses by something in them.  The one with the big rock FP.  The one with the loft full of little beds.  The one with the ugly countertops or the 1970's vintage carpet.  There are nicknames for agents too.  I imagine we all have one somewhere, I'm not sure I want to know what mine is.

I do the same thing with naming houses. It's easier to remember individual houses after seeing a plethora by what stood out in my mind. There was Cat-Man House. A single man was living with several cats that had taken over the house including what they were using as a litter box.

I showed the crazy basement house, the butt-head seller's house & the view house yesterday. Buyer's never remember the address after they've looked at more than 2 houses, but they remember that it had a crazy basement.

The view house had a huge black snake hanging over the deck. I just happened to look up and luckily realized pretty quickly that it wasn't real, otherwise I might have knocked the buyer over the edge of the deck since it was dangling about 10 ft over my head.

Dear Bob: very well written, and funny! We all need to smile.... it is true about the names..

Many years ago, before my real estate, career my husband and I were selling our previous home on our own... A man, called Stan was interested, and wanted to know every single improvement we had made. He was visiting the house and my husband called as we were walking by the phone, and out blasted "Is Stan the man there yet?"  A harmless enough name, but embarrassing all the same. He didn't buy the house, and we ended up listing! Have a great one, Gay

Hi Bob, very entertaining post. We always called my parents retirement home built up north Faraway for obvious reasons. Everyone in our family calls my husband Dr. Bombay (as in Bewitched fame) as he can fix almost any health issue with things around the house. Don't ask!  My daughter is Stompy McFeet as she came in every night after work stomping her feet saying "worst day ever". She had an hour  long commute in congestion every night. Me, I'm known as the go to girl around the brokerage. If you have a question, come to me and I know the answer or someone that does.
