Graceland Shopping Center - 2010

By

Graceland Shopping CenterGraceland sign 2010

Today at Graceland Shopping Center there is a

  • Kroger Marketplace
  • Target
  • Two fitness centers
  • Qdoba
  • Applebees
  • Sears Appliance & Hardware
  • OfficeMax

and way, way more...

A home owner near Graceland Shopping Center said of the shopping area earlier this decade:

"Graceland Shopping Center had an 80% vacancy rate and was in disrepair. There was no Target, or Kroger, or other shopping facilities, but only empty eyesore buildings."

I believe that the home owner was referring to 2001 or 2002.

In the 70s or 80's HER Realtors (now Real Living HER... brokerage I am affiliated with)  had a Graceland office! In the shopping center?  Or just nearby?  I suppose I could ask, at least one of the agents in my office started out in the HER Realtors, Graceland office .

There was a movie theater at Graceland!

Target Graceland 2010I remember discovering Graceland in the early 1990s.  I worked in Worthington... lived west of the Olentangy River but  I loved the J.C. Penny furniture store that was at Graceland.  There was a large sporting goods store?  Jack's Pets and Aquarium??

In the beginning Graceland Shopping Center

I love Don O'Brien's pictures from the year before  was built.  George Campbell's site has some great photos of Graceland over the years!

Nearby residential neighborhoods include  Beechwold, Chaseland, Delawanda Park, Old Beechwold, Sharon Heights, Tremont Gardens, Zooland and more... I have friends in Worthington who shop at the Graceland Kroger rather than the Worthington Mall Kroger (the Worthington Mall store is a very nice store, recently remodeled.)

Edit September 2011 to add the tag "Graceland" so I can find this post!

When I hear Graceland now I think of Elvis Presley's place. This summer we took a trip that included Graceland. Not big Elvis fans, but it was very interesting to see his home and the history around it. I guess now maybe I am an Elvis fan.

I thought it was funny when I moved here that the shopping center was called Graceland.  I  have never been to Graceland, Elvis's but I would love to someday.

This place was built in the mid or late 50s. So Elvis was on the horizon yet.  Just starting out?

I wonder what Graceland means?  Religious?  I think the farm that was where  our Gracelend Shopping Center is was called Graceland too.

Maureen McCabe wonders what "Graceland" means.  Let me tell some history of this place.

Maurice Patrick (Pat) Murnan trained his thuroughbred horses at this farm where he lived with his wife "Grace."  Pat also ran a gaming house at Broad & High during the 1920's & 1930's.  Pat dies in 1937 at the age of 76.

Grace Murnan (nee: Grace Backenstow) was the Madam owner of a brothel located at Front and Broad, in the 1920's.  Before he died, Pat named the farm on North High after Grace.

Pat raised his horses some distance away at his 700 acre stock farm off West Broad Street at "Murnan Road" abour 10 miles West of Broad & High.

Advise questions.

Mike the Columbus Metropolitan Library has 21 photos of a farm owned by Pat Murnan, their description with the photos is:

"A collection of photographs showing the 700 acre horse farm owned by Maurice Patrick Murnan. Pat Murnan was one of Columbus' more colorful characters. The downtown office for the Graceland Stock Farms was a front for his gambling establishment. The farm was located at 5058 North High Street, the area now occupied by Graceland Shopping Center.  "

The farm that was 700 acre was on W. Broad?   There was not 700 acres where Graceland is now was there?   Graceland Shopping Center I think was 70 some acres.    The pictures of the house look like the skeleton in Don O'Brien's 1953 photo,  Graceland  (licensed with a Creative Commons license)

Graceland is terrible.  The crime there sucks.  Pretty it up all you want, but my car was broken into, plus 3 others that I know of this month.  Plus 2 muggings that I know of.  Don't let the pretty Target and other stores fool you.  It is a bad neighborhood.  Just look what's adjacent to it.  Until they get 24 hour security and surveillance cameras, it's a place I wouldn't recommend anyone go to.  Awful.

Does anyone remember a steak house with a western theme that was on the left side of the strip near the old world bazaar store. It was unique because you picked your own steak out of the case and then you cooked them on a grill in the dining room.. I just cant think of the name of the place.. It would have been there in the early to mid 80's..
