How Do You Introduce Yourself? What's Your Secret

By
Real Estate Agent with Sierra Vista Realty BR583095000

We know this business is all about networking and branding yourself. Realtor Magazine has an article called "3 Mistakes to Avoid When Introducing Yourself" and it got me thinking about first impressions and introductions. I am in my first year in this industry and would love to know what some of the veterans have to say about the topic. When you meet someone, how do you introduce yourself? How do you brand yourself without sounding like a car salesman?

Do you wait for the question "So, what do you do for a living?"  I introduce myself to a new person, with "Hello. My name is Brad" or "I'm Brad Snyder" or "I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Brad." It is important to smile and in a group, I like to offer a  handshake as well. I think eye contact is important because it shows that you care and also shows self confidence.

I just haven't figured the perfect timing to mention what I do. Alright AR ..... share your wisdom and let's hear your what you think.

I just recently met with a Realtor. He was 15 minutes late. We drove around in his Mercedes CL500, and I could hear his stomach growling with hunger.

I can't describe how it made me feel, it just gave me mixed feelings....

Like wearing a sweater and shorts, just doesn't feel right.

I bought him lunch, my treat at Benihama's, but I wasn't going to continue business with him. I don't know, now that I write about it, I feel kinda bad...

You know what I am saying?

Hi Brad,  Great question.  I would also like to know how people answer the what do you do question.

To just answer I am a realtor or I am a real estate agent is soooo boring.

How about:

"I am a real estate agent specializing in helping first time buyers achieve their dream of home ownership"?

" I am a REaltor specializing in home puchase and sales in Powder Springs, marietta, and all of west Cobb County"?

I'd like to see what some of the experienced folks out there have to say.  thanks

It depends.  I wait until I know who I'm talking to before I mention what I do.

Brad,

I would say that it is all situational. I usually wait for people to ask what I do, or maybe work real estate into a conversation and see were it goes.

Brad, I usually wait until the conversation gets around to community or real estate...related things where I can work it in.

It is tough sometimes to know when to bring up your profession as a Realtor. I always where name tag. Most people notice that anyway or I wear an embroidered shirt. In a coat and tie, I wear the Realtor "R". Most of the time the message gets across and I never had to say it myself.

Gary is right, wearing a nametag opens up the conversation about what you do.  Otherwise, I don't think it's necessary to include in the next breath after "Hello, I'm Brad."  Don't worry, they will find out soon enough!

I find that if you are talking with someone new, just ask them about their profession first and let them talk all about it.  As they are talking about what they do, see how you can throw in a sentence about how your profession has a common interest or how you as a Realtor could help enhance their business.

Hello. I am reading everyone's responses and find many of your thoughts insightful. Wondering if I can tap into some of everyone's knowledge. I work in the mortgage industry, and my goal is to meet real estate agents in my area that can expose me to buyers. I am sure realtors are inundated now, more than ever, by loan officers with the same goal. I'm very passionate about my job, and have a great deal of ethical concern for customers. I want to approach real estate agents THE RIGHT WAY, and am curious, 1. What is the best way to introduce myself to a realtor (not just with words, but situationally - in other words, should I call local realtors that have open houses? Should I simply show up unannounced? Should I talk to the brokers first and ask how I can help their realtors? etc. First impressions are everything.) and 2. What is the best way to demonstrate my abilities. I have a been a top producer at most sales positions I have held, but I'm sure that everyone says that. How do I stand out?

Greg, I think as a Realtor myself. Go ahead to the open house and just tell them, this is how I go about trying to meet a realtor I can work with. Say, I see you are here by yourself, I like to offer my services where I can attend the open house with you. Open up what you can do for them and not just how they can feed you clients. It really is a great relationship between the two helping each other.
