Someone asked me just yesterday, "What do people DO here for Labor Day? Do they have BBQs and stuff?"
Choice of indoor or outdoor dining tables, and a lanai built-in grill with an ocean and beach view at this Kolea condo
I used to live on the Mainland too, and remember how that Labor Day cook-out had the bittersweet flavor of the end of summer. Here in Hawai'i we enjoy indoor-outdoor living year-round and this "summer kitchen" on the lanai of a beachfront condo is sure to be fired up regularly throughout the winter season.
My Big Island Labor Day memories involve other traditions.
Waimea will echo with the shouts of rodeo contestants this weekend.
What horsewoman or urban cowboy can resist the 36th annual Labor Day rodeo at Parker Ranch, featuring all the usual Mainland events and a few like "Po'o Wai U" you'll see only in Hawai'i, Saturday and Sunday in Waimea? (There is a horse auction at 10am on the 5th because you'll need a steed after I show you a few great ranch properties for sale nearby.)
September also brings the Hawaii Island Festival, a full month of cultural events, including a few with a great sense of humor. If you've already done the hotel luau and the Polynesian Cultural Center, it is worth planning your Big Island vacation to dig a little deeper.
Hawaii Island Festival kicks off this weekend at Waikoloa Beach Resort.
Last night was the Ms. Aloha Nui Gala, a beauty pageant acknowledging that the Polynesian sensibility around what makes a woman attractive does not favor string beans like myself. Tomorrow the Great Waikoloa Poke Contest pits local chefs and amateur contestants with our local raw fish speciality (think ceviche or sashimi). If you read this time, head over to the Marriott at 7 pm for the Clyde "Kindy" Sproat Falsetto and Storytelling contest for only $7 to get an evening of local musical tradition (I have a special fondness for this event because Kindy was an icon of Kohala, the area where I live. If you miss the event, stop in at the North Kohala Community Resource Center in Hawi for a copy of the new book about him.)
I just finished showing condos at Halii Kai and am headed over there myself.
A hui hou,
Beth
