Offering custom contact lens exams, as well as regular eye glasses exams. "It's not for vision correction, so how can it hurt my eyes?" I've been asked by many young adults. Beware; so-called "Lady Gaga contacts," also known as round contact lenses, can hurt your eyes with only a day of wear. I know this is the time of year everyone talks about wearing fancy colored contacts to an upcoming party, or special round contacts for an evening out, but did you know, getting a prescription first, may save your sight?

December, 2011 - I just found some of these cosmetic contacts for sale without a prescription at the Everett Mall. The sales associate had no idea offering them over the counter without an RX was illegal. I hope I set her straight!
Just this week, I have found another local retailer illegally selling contact lenses to the public. The danger to your daughter's or son's eyes is real. Please, tell your kids that contact lenses that don't correct vision, still need to be fitted by a professional.
Does a baseball glove fit a football? Do "football" shaped contacts fit your eyes, if your eyes are more like baseballs? How do you know? Would you wear shoes three sizes too small? Of course not! Don't risk the future of your eyesight with contacts that haven't been fitted to your eye shape.
A licensed optician friend is now helping me properly report these offenders to the State of Washington.
If you see them being sold over the counter at a beauty supply, nail salon, anime book sellers, or a local sci-fi or comic sort of convention, please contact an optometrist's office near you; the vision you save may be your own son's or daughter's.
