I note with sorrow the passing of Mario Rubio, father of Marco Rubio, Candidate for US Senate in Florida, Mr Mario Rubio, age 83, died this evening at Baptist Hospital in Miami surrounded by his family and loved ones following a long bout with emphysema and lung cancer.
It had been previously reported that Candidate Rubio had withdrawn from a scheduled debate this weekend with Kendrick Meek, Democrat nominee in the Senate Race, on Meet the Press because of his father's failing health.
The campaign has announced a suspension of political activity for an undetermined period for the family to mourn the loss of their father.
Marco Rubio has been an inspirational candidate in Florida for the US Senate. I have heard him speak on several occasions and his mother and father are a big part of his story. He speaks often and with love of his parents and their immigration to the United States from Cuba and their sacrifices to provide their children with the opportunities of being an American. I can only imagine Marco's father's pride in the achievements of his children - particularly Marco and his service as Speaker of the Florida House and his long and difficult campaign to be the next Senator from Florida.
My thoughts are with Marco Rubio and his family this evening with their loss and the inspiration their family story has brought to so many of Marco's friends and supporters in the political arena in Florida.
