Are You On the Road to Obsolescence? Or the Road to the Future?

What do these two vehicles have in common?

1971 Oldsmobile Toronado

1966 Imperial

Yes, they both have four wheels, motors and can transport people, but what the 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado and the 1966 Imperial also have in common is that they both are vehicles produced by brands that no longer produce vehicles.  They both became unprofitable, redundant in purpose and produced products that were perceived to be less relevant in the minds of many consumers, until their corporate parents "pulled the plug" on them.

There are many parallels that can be drawn between the fates of these brands and many real estate companies and careers. Heed the warning signs!  We all know that profitability is a challenge these days. Fiscal control of our businesses is important and creates many difficult challenges, but what about your purpose?

Are you or is your company becoming redundant in purpose like these brands did?  Are you sufficiently differentiated from your competitors?  Do you and your brand make a difference in the real estate world, or do you simply exist to skim a little bit off the top of the pool of business... another "also" at the bottom of the list of companies or agents that people think of when they think of real estate.

How about your relevancy?  Are you really relevant?  Would the industry or your local marketplace feel an impact if you were no longer a part of it?  Do consumers think of you or your brokerage as innovative, current and forward thinking?  Or are you perceived as offering a product that is dated, boring or something that they can get at any number of other brokerages?

There are incredible opportunities available to real estate professionals.  Even in challenging market circumstances, locally we have sen the establishment of new brokerages doing innovative things in the areas of marketing and technology.  We have also seen consolidation of brokerages and rebranding efforts, sometimes creating the perception of a combination of strengths to better serve clients.

Ask yourself this, "What are you and your brokerage doing to be considered relevant and innovative in the minds of the public?"  If your answer is "Nothing" or "I don't know", then ask yourself this follow up question: "Did the people who built their careers at Oldsmobile, Imperial, Pontiac, Plymouth, Saturn, Hummer, Mercury, American Motors, etc. have the same answer about their businesses and companies before they ceased to exist?"

Some of those companies were viewed as highly innovative at one point in their long histories... but remember, innovation and relevancy are measured continuously... you can be relevant one day and redundant the next!

WOW! I hope my marketing isn't as old fashioned as those cars!

hi Steve - first, congrats on the feature - a very thoughtful post.

Second - I laughed out loud at Karen - Anne's comment.

Third - Re: Gregory's comment - My first and second cars were a mustang and a challenger.  Both of them were totalled when other negligent driver's decided to come through a stop light and stop sign.  My hubby's first new car was a 1977 red Camaro.  So I'd take any one of those 3 again but they just aren't the best real estate cars for signs and clients.

Now back to the post.  Yah, it's all about branding isn't it?  We have a big RE/MAX Fall connect conference at the end of the month in Toronto so it will be interesting to see just if there is anything new and innovative coming down the pipes.

Steve:

I love cars and car analogies and I strive to keep my marketing efforts as relevant as a BMW or Mercedes. With further efforts I would like to push into the category of a Lamborghini.

Keep going to RainCamp, it will put you on the "road" to relevancy. I'm 54 now, but am determined to keep up with all this stuff until I'm 80. After that, I'm taking some time off.

Cool Post Steve. I read it as a Re-blog. The cars look great and are great examples to what can happen to us. Work your business like it may go out of business, or it surely will...by the way, I think the Toronado has great lines.

I am not sure where things are going.  With technology I think it is a great time for small brokers, but the Bank/Government controlled market may lead to dominance by a few big companies.

That is why we are all here. To be relevant. To create a web presence. We are all trying new things such as blogging to try to not go the way of the dinosaurs.

working hard to develop that relevant niche. It requires constant self-scrutiny, re-evaluation and replotting course on a regular basis. Few things worth having ever come easily.

I work for an awesome King Kong of a gorrilla.  Its the people running the brokerage and the agents that create the relevance.  We are a tight knit group and help one another with the technology and marketing aspects of the business.  Its about cultivating the right attitude, being creative and actually thriving instead of surviving.

I've always thought that doing things the old way just for the sake of doing things the old way was pretty silly. There's so much innovation that we can incorporate into our businesses and lives. If the old stuff works, fine, but I make sure that i'm keeping up to date on technology and what's coming in the "new" real estate world. Keep moving forward!

The other thing those cars have in common is that they're a whole lot better looking than today's new cars. I can't tell one make from another any more... they all look like lumps, all alike. And they're all trying to beat each other at being better in their "alikeness." There's lots of "me too" stuff going on.

I don't think that would be a good plan for a real estate agent.

In real estate, while you definitely need to remain relevant, you also need to stand out from the crowd.

I've narrowed my niche and it is beginning to get recognized.  It really does take a lot of sticktoittiveness in order to succeed in today's world.  I've been told in the past by pessimists that my "my new idea" will never work...sometimes they were right but a few times they were very, very wrong.  Great post!

Hello Steve:

You already have lots of comments so one more may not tip the scales any direction.  This is a great post and I wish I had seen it earlier so I could have recommended it.  Relevancy to redundancy in 24 hours is a scary thought, but I agree it can and does happen.

Interesting point of view. I would offer that relevancy can be defined differently from a service point of view compared to that of a product.

Personally I tell my customers that I offer what other great Realtors offer, however since only 1 in 10 are good, chances are if they're talking to me the others won't compare. I say it this way to account for the other brilliant, highly service oriented individuals I share my job title with. It also paints an accurate picture of the rest of those who try to call themselves Realtors.

Instead of having someone be more relevant, maybe the observation is that they have chosen non-relevance and should die out just like the Toronado & Imperial.

I love posing this question to people.  Most seem to just accept being the person to skim 3-7 deals a year and staying irrelevant......it's sad.  Maybe it's like the 80/20 rule.  20% care enough to take action and the rest just hang back.

"Are you really relevant?"  This is a great question to be asking particularly as things continue to evolve quickly.

Steve - This is the exact reason why I changed firms this year. It had less to do with market share and more to do with being affiliated with a broker who is committed to business development and finding new niches. I also found it hard to sell a company which was not at least a well known national name. Once again, I am enjoying my own personal success thanks to innovation.

Steve, this is a great challenge question for agents who want to be around for a while!  I know there is power in the brand of RE/MAX and they are cutting edge with technology!

I love having top market share in our area & being able to keep up with the latest tools to help buyers and sellers make good decisions!
