The small building that was in the shadow of a magnificent depot in Searcy Arkansas.

This little building has always had charm and just didn't seem to fit.  Now I know why.  It's old!  It has been a dentist office at the end of Spring Street across from Spring Park and across from First Baptist and a block away from The Mayflower Hotel.  Here's the way it looks today.

And here's the way it looked a long time ago.  It sat in the shadow of the magnificent depot.  A railroad came right up close to Spring Park and Mayflower Hotel.

Here's another view showing the big depot in more detail.  Finding these pictures and putting them together makes me understand the location of this old depot which I never had before.  Now I wonder when they tore down this beautiful structure.  Wasn't it lovely?  Was that the end of the tracks?  Looks as if there is a railroad that goes no further.

Thank you for these pictures...I had completely forgotten about the railroad depot, it has been gone so long.  But I'm with you, was the depot the end of the line?  I'm pretty sure it was.  There were no tracks crossing Spring St. and continuing on down Pleasure St.

As a little girl I was always in awe of the Western Union in that little office building...I didn't get there often but remember thinking getting a telegram OR sending one, was very special. Oftentimes, to receive a telegram was to receive bad news.

I hope some other Searcians will pitch in on this one.  We need Bob Collins.

Anita, isn't it amazing.  That little building has survived.  I guess the depot was not huge as I'd thought from seeing the picture in the past.  But these pictures put everything in perspective and in place for me.  One of the guys had sent me the path of the railroads in the past but finding it would take me two days!

Godmother,

That one looks inviting. You have promissed me lodging but how about a startup business for Godson in a nice little building. Food for thought.

That's the  Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company (CRI&P)  at Spring and Pleasure. The line was formerly the Searcy and Des Arc Railroad Company [6/29/1899] and was purchased by CRI&P on 3/24/1904.

If you look closely, you can see the end of the line block at  about the center of Paula's photo (last picture).

The station was across from Spring Park and the Library The Plaza Theater would be on the back side.

Barbara, that second picture is so good. Love the old railway express truck and the boy riding by on a bicycle.

Don, all those initials do me in.  I stand corrected on the name of the building.  I also had forgotten that it was Paula's picture so she needs to get credit for it.  She may need to copyright all her old pictures because they are so precious now.  I also like the second picture.  I like the guys standing there to have their picture taken.  Hubby says he remembers the depot because he said some guys operated a car lot there at one time.....his uncle was one of them

Nutsy, you already have three houses in Searcy if you ever decide to come here.  That Wheat cousin of yours is annoying....

Bill Saunders, thanks for looking at my blog and commenting.

Barbara,

You sure are hurting Wheat's feelings. I think you are picking on the boy.
