Anyone Have Advice for My Dog Keyah?

By

My dog, Keyah (as in key-ah)  is a lovable 7 year old white Lab.  I love her to death.  However, since she was about a year old she has been afraid of being in a moving car.  If I open the door, she'll jump right in.  But the minute I start moving she starts jumping up and down and barking with the loudest bark ever.  In fact, her barking fogs up the back windows so much that when the car is rocking it sort of looks like two teenagers having a lot of fun in the back seat.  I've even had a dog trainer tell me he couldn't take it because her barking was so loud and he didn't know what to advise me to do.  I've recently installed a dog barrier in the back of my SUV.  Prior to that I had her harnesed, with the harness attached to the seatbelt.  She jumped up and down so much that she unknowingly unlocked the seatbelt and she immediaty jumped to the front seat and onto my lap on a major Long Island road.  Scrary to say the least.

I can tolerate taking her to the Long Island Dog Parks or to the vets or for some brief errands around town, (and as soon as she loses sight of me she stops barking!), but I would love to take her on longer trips...I just don't know if I have the stamina to listen to her for a long period.  Any thoughts?

Oh, and if any of you are from Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Keyah was named after beautiful Keyah Grande, where we were fortunate enough to spend two summers, long before it bacame the wonderful retreat it is today..

Marie-Denise,

Check out the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan.  He has a TV show on National Geographic, and I remember a show about two dogs who did that in the car also.  He has a blog, a website and a magazine.  He is amazing with dogs, and his books are wonderful.  Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip, Ron and Alexandra.  Keyah and I are big fans of Cesars (except she jumps at the TV whenever she sees the dogs).  I must have missed the show about the dogs that did the same thing.  I'll have to find it.

Used to use a herbal product called "Rescue Remedy" that you can buy at health food stores and rub onto the animals ears --- my experience is it dramatically calms the animal --- they are not drugged out like with drugs -- but just get mellow and not agitated. Used to rub on the ears about an hour before a car adventure. All the best.

Dee, thanks for your recommendation of Cesar Milan.  Keyah and I are big fans.  I haven't seen him tack this but Ron and Alexandra Seigal suggested that there was an episode about a simillar situation. Thanks for reading the post.

Bob and Caroline, thanks for your suggestion about Rescue Remedy.  I will look into it.  Some time ago I heard about using Vena Cava from the health food store.  It didn't do anything.  Resuce Remedy may just do the trick.  Thanks.
