My parenting style is somewhat different from that of my parents and probably most of the parents in my neighborhood. I put the "func" in dysfunctional. At this point in my life, my 11-year-old daughter still thinks I'm cool. My soon to be 19-year-old son (he'll be 19 on September 11th) thinks I'm just weird and goofy. I don't know exactly when I went from being cool to goofy, but I digress.
My kids and I have always enjoyed roller skating. We used to go skating on Saturday afternoons on a regular basis but when my daughter began playing softball in the spring, summer, and fall (that's right nearly 9 months a year), we had to curtail our roller skating on Saturdays because of her softball games and practices. My daughter, Ryane (pronounced like Ryan) still goes skating on Friday nights here at the Smyrna Skate Center but I don't go with her. All of her friends from middle school go on Friday night and then I would be "uncool" if I went with her. I'm trying so hard to hang on to my "cool" status so I usually go hang out with my adult friends on Friday night while she skates. We would both like to go skating on Saturday night where the crowd is more of a mixture of kids and adults but the skating rink is so crowded on Saturday night that it is hard to even skate much less enjoy yourself.
So last night Ryane was asking me to come out to the garage and teach her how to skate backwards. I looked at that hard concrete garage floor and I knew I was setting myself up for a world of hurt if I went out there. So being the "cool" mom that I am, I suggested that we roller skate in the house. You see, I got to keep the wonderful big house in the divorce (lucky me) and the entire main level is all hardwood floors. Knowing that my ex and my mother would disapprove of us skating in the house, I just could not resist. So me and Ryane moved the furniture out of the way, hooked the Ipod up to the computer speakers, and skated to old school music for about two hours last night. We had a blast! My knees and legs hurt so bad this morning but it was all worth it. As we pushed the furniture back into place, Ryane told me "You're the coolest mom ever!" I'm putting you all on notice that I am STILL the Queen of Cool.
