I think I know how Dorothy felt when that tornado hit her small Kansas town back in 1939. I will never see the movie Wizard of Oz again without remembering today. Photo from usatoday.com
The day went like this.....showing a young couple three homes that they wanted to see. No problem. House #1 - very nice, but needs a lot of updating. House #2 - very roomy, lots to offer, but still stuck in the 60s. House #3 - BINGO! It has everything that they asked for and more.
So this is good news. And a couple hours later they ask to go back in and see it again. Not a problem as the house is vacant. I call the listing agent and let her know we are going back in - as a courtesy more than anything else.
The young couple decides that they want to write an offer. OK! But I want them to go home for a little while and think about how much they want their offer to be. And they do. Then they call me - again.
"Do you think it would be ok if we went back in that house again? At your convenience of course. I'd really like my sister to see it." Now normally I would get a little exasperated, but I only live a few streets from this house and it's only 6:30, so what's the harm?
I tell them I'll be there in 30 minutes and head down the hall to change clothes. I tell my husband to put his shoes on so that when I'm done we can go to dinner. So far this is all pretty plain - just run of the mill.
Well - we are in the house, all parties are ooohing and aaahing in every room and then we hear the tornado sirens. Loud. Very loud. OK - I look outside and it's a little dark, but not a big concern. Yet. And then the temperature dropped about 25 degrees in 15 seconds and the air got eerily still - for about 5 seconds. I looked skyward and saw a very menacing sky >>>
I stared in disbelief at the most beautifully menacing (can you imagine?) miracle of Mother Nature's wrath that I have seen in a long time. The clouds were in layers with alternating swirling motions. Occasionally a huge bolt of lightning would flash across them.
As I'm standing there with my duh! face hanging out the neighbor sticks her head out and says, "You better get in the basement! There's a tornado warning!!" I thanked her for her concern and opened the door to tell my buyers and their family to head downstairs due to a very unsettling sky. And they did - quite quickly actually. LOL
Well, the skies got darker and darker while the air kept getting cooler. And the winds were picking up considerably. I ran to the car and grabbed my purse thinking...if the damned car blows away I don't want to have to get a new driver's license and credit cards. That would be a real pain in the arse. (It's a woman thing!)
Then I got to thinking....I should take some photos of this! Aha! But..........well.........the good camera is at home. Another duh! moment. But wait! I have a camera phone! That will work! And it did. Obviously.
We never did get hit with a true tornado - Thank God! But I can tell you that the hair on the back of my neck was standing up for about 20 minutes. Once the wind died down and the rain stopped we all parted ways and will meet in the morning to write their offer.
Oh - and the listing agent's sign blew right out of the metal frame and landed about 2 blocks away. My client syas that is a sign that this house is supposed to be theirs. Wish them luck - they are surely taken with this house!
And this last shot scared the stuff right out of me! I was almost ready to put my head between my knees and....
