Where is the Power in Facebook?

In 2010 I pledged to dive more into the socail media aspect of online marketing.  After spending some time with both Twitter and Facebook I decided that Facebook would be a good tool for me to focus my time on.

WIthin that time I have learned a lot of the ins and outs of Facebook.  Although it does seem to have a small effect on SEO, I have not seen a large effect.  It does offer the easiest way to interact with your customer base, but I do not think that it should take place of a web site.

Here is what I do not understand:
Within the last week I have seen 6 different large companies spend probably millions of dollars on commercials and within their commerial they are promoting their facebook page throughout the ad rather than their website itself.

I was interested in getting feedback on why they are doing this.  These companies put millions of dollars into marketing so they must know why it is so important to advertise your facebook page.

I believe Facebook is the new version of the online Phonebook.  I would be more likely to use a vendor that was one of my online Facebook friends, compared to someone that wasn't.   That's my opinion ...

Niche-community social marketing is the new venue and Facebook and Twitter are the kings in their respective industries. Through the push on Facebook the companies can offer customized offers and get their followers and fans to spread the word faster than the 30 sec. ad you just watched.

Stephanie,
Good point.  They were pretty genius in starting something where other huge companies actually use the facebook brand to promote their own company.

Hi Rob,

I think the benefits of using FaceBook as a marketing tool largely depends upon "your industry" and the amount of time you spend on it.  Things like Bars, Clubs, Restaurants, Churches and Community Organizations seem to have a lot of success with it, where for others, it appears to be a "Hit or Miss".

In August, we begin laying the ground work for analytics on our site and so far, leads from Facebook are barely showing on the radar, less than 0.5%.  The biggest referrals are being generated by our syndication parthers, with the top 3 being Google Maps(38.7%), OverStock (15.8%), and Vast(10.8%).

You are also right that Facebook should not replace your Web site. The ultimate goal, of course, being to drive customers to your site, put the properties you have in front of them and then have them contact you for more info.

Graham,

Yeah I do not see as much of a use for it in real estate.  It seems like a simple blog could accomplish more.

Facebook gives companies an opportunity to feed consumers information automatically. It's a great way to stay connected.
