22 Comments on Having THAT Talk With Your Child. It's Time and It's Important.
Gene: Great thoughts. At first, I wasn't sure what this was about but good post. I'm going to suggest it get featured.
Gene, it is a shame that Schools don't teach this. Unfortunately many teachers are simply not qualified to teach finances.
Great points Gene! I wish this was mandatory in high schools or Freshman college.
Your offer to come in and speak to a class is very generous and if someone in your area doesn't jump on it they're missing the boat!
Halina: Thank You. I'm glad that you liked it. Hope it proves helpful to you or someone you know.
Margaret: Oh boy ... I hear ya. Some are more susceptible to it than others too. I know that for a fact. One son wouldn't go near credit. The other? They were best of friends ... until the bills started coming. When they're that young, they truly don't realize the hard work it will take to get those bills paid off and improve their credit scores. Exactly why I wrote this ...
Damon: It's why I made the offer to go into the schools and organizations to speak. Who can tell kids about keeping good credit habits better than a lender that sees the horror and ramifications of bad credit every day? I'm hoping some Chicagoland schools agree with your assessment of the wisdom of hosting something like this. Thanks for writing Damon ...
Joan: I'm hoping lots of area schools keep me very very busy too! Thanks for the kind words. Glad that you thought the message was a good one ...
Gene
Paul: Had you going with the title, huh? Got to admit, that kindof was my whole idea ... but glad you stuck with it and read the post. Thanks for suggesting it ... that's a real honor coming from you. Hope business is steady and strong ...

I agree, from my kid's first job, walking dogs, cleaning out stalls, they had to save 10 percent of what the made. It was a good habit to form.
Terri: Most definitely a wise thing to have them do! They'll thank you later ...

Gene - OY VEY!!! What a great message! I too wish this were taught in high school. It is so essential that kids learn this before they get to college and get that first credit card.
Gene this is an excellent post. I remember reading several years ago about a college student who committed suicide because she was knee deep in debt and didn't want her parents to know. When the creditors started calling the mother for payment I remember the mother's response being "you didn't call me before you issue the card to my daughter, so why are you calling me now?"
Donne: I'm hoping this message gets out. After having my own kids .. and seeing their friends struggle with school loans, etc. ... I think it's very important that kids get educated early. That and seeing the results of so many bad credit decisions now. You'd be great at doing this kind of seminar too Donne. The kids would love you. I hope you consider it out your way ...
Charita: What a heartbreaking story you tell. Ruthless is the only word I can think of for these people. Kids need to be aware and educated about the ramifications ... and the length of time it takes to clean-up these indiscretions of credit. I'm hoping local schools are open to my idea of a credit presentation. Thanks for the kind words ...

Gene, so many teens think of money as that stuff that comes out of an ATM machine. There is no link between money and maybe, um, earning it?
Pat: Exactly! And that's why I wrote this post. I've had some interest in my seminar. I'm going to enjoy presenting these and helping kids ... hopefully! Thanks for writing ...

Gene - It's funny that you should say that because I do have a way with my little, young, first timers even though I've never been a mama (other than my fur babies). Better yet is that I often get along really well with their parents, who are more times than not around my age. After helping some of my first timers get their first mortgage, I have gone on to help parents and even grandparents. I am currently doing a refi for the grandfather of one of my first timers I helped last year.
Donne: See? Get hopping girl! What a great and useful idea ... and you'd be working with those that you love to work with best. Your first-timers. You could be Momma Donne to all those high schoolers! AAGGGHHH!!! Marilyn's working on my presentation with me. When we get something up and running .. I'll send it off to you for viewing and critiquing.
Gene
Too many parents fail to have "the talk" about credit with their children.. I wonder if they are the same parents who fail to have the "the talk" about budgeting and plannning with themselves.
Joan: My guess is "yes". Maybe they just don't understand the importance and connection? Hopefully, they are in the minority ...
Thanks for writing ..
Gene
Reblogged...what a great topic Gene! Sorry I haven't been around lately...still getting my family ducks in a row and managing my business...oh, and praying for rain and COLD WEATHER! Hope all is well!
SarahGray: How ironic that you write .. as I was thinking of dropping you a line. You know .. the big brother checking up on you kind of note ... lol. But here you are ... and that is great. I'm glad that you found the post beneficial. Seems I struck a chord with it ... as I'm getting some real interest in hosting some seminars locally. I'm lovin' it!
We're awaiting our first grandchild (a girl) in less than a month. We're pretty eager to meet her ... and waiting anxiously. Looks like that trip out your way will wait for a bit. I don't think I could tear grandma away right now!
Take care ... and know that we're thinking of you here back in IL ...
Gene
I just suggested you. I think our high school here teaches a course in this - not sure if it's required. Might be a good idea. You have written such a great post that is easy for a parent to share with their kids, or just use as a launching pad for the talk ...
Dagny: Thanks for the suggestion. I think the topic is a good one for teachers and parents to broach. If this post helps do that ... it's performed its mission ...
