Have you seen the Mariachis at La Tolteca in Wilkes-Barre, PA?

Most people who know me know that my wife is from South America, Uruguay to be exact. I was also adopted by my legal father at age 14, giving me my last name of Trevino. My father was a true Mexican man and loved Mexican food. He introduced me to spicy foods (his idea of a snack was eating jalapeno peppers straight from the jar). I still remember going to his parents house in Corpus Christi, Texas and watching his mother cook flour tortillas for breakfast over the flame on the stove. I thought that was the greatest thing until I tasted her cooking. That was the greatest thing!!

Since then, I have had an affinity for Mexican and South American cooking. When I lived in NC there was a great authentic Mexican restaurant there that I loved to visit. I moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA about 8 years ago and would have to take a road trip to find good Mexican food. Now, my wait is over. There are a couple of authentic Mexican restaurants in Wilkes-Barre now. I'd have to say my favorite is La Tolteca.

Wilkes Barre, PA 18702

This is a chain restaurant, but has a great feel to it and the food is excellent. It's located very near the shopping and entertainment areas of Wilkes-Barre, so it's an easy find. It has a very nice sitting area outside, if the weather is permitting, and the inside is decorated in festive colors and murals. There's a bar area, for those die hard drinkers, and there are seating arrangements for small and large groups. The service is great and the wait staff speak Spanish, so you might be able to brush up on yours when you visit. Don't worry, they speak English too, for those too timid to try a new language. I love taking my clients who are looking for real estate in Wilkes-Barre there, especially if they're Mexican. It really gives them a feel and taste of home.

I think the thing i enjoy the most, other than the food, are Tuesday nights at La Tolteca. Tuesday night is Mariachi night. There are live Mariachis who walk through the restaurant, playing and singing for the customers. It's really a lot of fun just to sit and listen to them sing. They wear authentic outfits and are truly talented. It's quite something to hear them sing the American songs that people request.

So, the next time you're in Wilkes-Barre, PA plan on having some great food at La Tolteca and come on Tuesday night to listen to the Mariachis. You won't regret it. You may even see Susana and me there with family, friends or a client (and once you're a client, you're almost a part of the family!). See you there!!

Diane,

It's a great time. Maybe we'll have to get together on a Tuesday night there.

Thank you. We enjoy ethnic foods, and it's always good to get a recommendation from someone who knows authentic.
