Wednesday Wisdom ~ Humor.
Humor is important to me. It's a way of life. I try to have a good laugh everyday. It's important to me. I always try to look on the bright side and take the good out of every situation. There are times when that in itself is a difficult thing to do, but I really do try to focus on the positive. And sometimes life can be very stressful, especially in today's economy. But a good laugh makes things feel better. It can lessen the stress, even if only for a little while.
My grandfather always used to say, "when things go wrong, years down the road, you will look back on the situation and be able to laugh about it, so why not laugh now? Being angry and upset will only ruin your day. And nothing, out of your control, can be so bad that is worth controlling your mood." I try to live by his advice.
I'm not easily offended and I certainly don't take myself too seriously. I try to roll with whatever may happen. You can choose to be angry, frustrated or upset over something or you can try to find the humor in it and move on. After all, who wants to hang around angry, unhappy people? I try to avoid those types.
Laughter has been found to actually improve the immune system, prevent heart disease, relieve or reduce stress, relax your muscles, reduce anxiety and fears and even make us more attractive to others. And the best thing about laughter is, it's absolutely FREE. Laughter is a healthy habit to get into.
One of my favorite authors, Erma Bombeck, was known for her sense of humor and how she dealt with life's little problems through humor, even when she was diagnosed with cancer. Some of my favorite quotes about laughter are:
If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?
What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul. ~ Yiddish Proverb
Humor is the shock absorber of life, it helps to smooth out the rough spots.
Advice is sometimes best delivered through humor.
Even if there is nothing to laugh about, laugh on credit.
Laughter is the best medicine.
Laughing is contagious!
So, my challenge to you is to laugh at least once a day. We all get caught up in the reality of life, but make sure you do take some time to have a belly laugh. It will improve your mood and your day. Do you remember the last time you laughed so hard, you cried?
