Wednesday Wisdom ~ Humor

Wednesday Wisdom ~ Humor.

Humor is important to me.  It's a way of life.  I try to have a good laugh everyday.  It's important to me.  I always try to look on the bright side and take the good out of every situation.  There are times when that in itself is a difficult thing to do, but I really do try to focus on the positive.   And sometimes life can be very stressful, especially in today's economy.  But a good laugh makes things feel better.  It can lessen the stress, even if only for a little while.

My grandfather always used to say, "when things go wrong, years down the road, you will look back on the situation and be able to laugh about it, so why not laugh now?  Being angry and upset will only ruin your day.  And nothing, out of your control, can be so bad that is worth controlling your mood."  I try to live by his advice.

I'm not easily offended and I certainly don't take myself too seriously.  I try to roll with whatever may happen.  You can choose to be angry, frustrated or upset over something or you can try to find the humor in it and move on.  After all, who wants to hang around angry, unhappy people?  I try to avoid those types.

Laughter has been found to actually improve the immune system, prevent heart disease, relieve or reduce stress, relax your muscles, reduce anxiety and fears and even make us more attractive to others.  And the best thing about laughter is, it's absolutely FREE.  Laughter is a healthy habit to get into.

One of my favorite authors, Erma Bombeck, was known for her sense of humor and how she dealt with life's little problems through humor, even when she was diagnosed with cancer.  Some of my favorite quotes about laughter are:

If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul. ~ Yiddish Proverb

Humor is the shock absorber of life, it helps to smooth out the rough spots.

Advice is sometimes best delivered through humor.

Even if there is nothing to laugh about, laugh on credit.

Laughter is the best medicine.

Laughing is contagious!

So, my challenge to you is to laugh at least once a day.  We all get caught up in the reality of life, but make sure you do take some time to have a belly laugh.  It will improve your mood and your day.  Do you remember the last time you laughed so hard, you cried?

Nice post Dawn, I loved Erma Bombeck! I laughed pretty hard the other night when I read Terry's blog about the guy that went into a bar . . . can't remember the title but it was pretty funny.

You've hit on one of my favorite topics.........humor..............so good for the soul.  I try to find humor in just about everything..........life is too serious and we have too many problems to deal with on a day to day basis.  Without humor, I doubt if I could get through most days.

Great post Dawn..............wise grandfather you had, teaching you about humor and laughter........he was so right, glad you listened to him.

Dawn,  Always looking for a laugh!  Generally start the morning either a) on Active Rain or b) pulling Dilbert and Get Fuzzy comics off their websites!  At least one of them will give me a laugh to get started.  Done right, humor can make even a "bad" message more palatable!

Dawn, as you probably already know by now, humor is a very important part of my collective being too!

Except for death, and a few other things, you can always find some silver lining to laugh about.

Dawn, your appreciation for the power of humor shines in your blogs.

Wasn't it Erma Bombeck who came up with the epitaph, "I told you I was sick!"

Craig ~ death is one thing that is not funny.  But you know at funerals, it seems to me that my family members always end up talking about the funny things the deceased did or said.  It's those things we remember about a person.

Robert ~ a good laugh can ususally help a person, that is if no one is hurt or offended.

Mary Kay ~ I think you may be correct!
