Many of you know I have been on a strict diet for the last year.  The last three or four months I have been hitting the gym in the mornings before going to work.  I am starting to finally get back in shape. It took losing over 170 lbs.

Last weekend I took a little time off for the first time in several months.  Our chess club had a campout at Bellows Beach on the Windward Side of Oahu. My six year old son Jacob and I camped out for 2 nights.  It was a great father/ son bonding.

We did a lot of activities that even a few months ago I would not have been in physical shape to do.  Six games of basketball; touch football and swimming in the surf throughout the weekend.  All things I wouldn't or couldn't have done until recently.  I have not played a single game of basketball in years.  I would have had a heart attack trying.  It was so exciting for me to find I could keep up with the young guys again.

Getting in shape is something that not only affects me physically it also affects me mentally and in business.

  • I have much more energy for my work than ever.
  • I sleep better so I am rested.
  • Potential clients respond in a more positive way to me.  I am not as intimidating to children.
  • I put out as more positive energy.
  • I do not get tired climbing stairs to show third floor condos.

My message for the day:  If you want to send your life and business in a more positive direction.  Put down the remote for the TV and head for the gym.  The first two weeks are hard, but after that it gets easy.  Also get rid of the sugar and eat good food.  You will be amazed how much better you will feel.

Charles - I came up with medical issues a year ago and asked the doctor what can I do.  She said lose the weight and most will be reversed.  It worked.

Yvette - It is hard to start, but once you get in the habit it is easy.

Randy,

Thanks for the post and inspiration. I am about to start my regimen again. This time with more determination to hold on. I did feel a lot better in so many ways, when I was a lot lighter. I keep reminding myself, that I must put my well be at the top of the list. Thanks and congratulations.

Wow Randy! 170lbs!!! That's awesome! Your family must be proud of you!.What an inspiration you are to me...I've been going to the gym for about 1 month and once I go I feel better, but it's the getting there!

 Good job!

I started working out again four years ago.  Joined the gym because my husband had high cholestrol.  Today I am still working out and he excerises by check.    Four years ago I was 47 years old and looking like my mother.  My arms were sagging, my belly was sagging, and my behind was spreading and a size 12 going into a 14.  Today I work out five days a week and am more physically fit than most much younger people and wear a size 8.  I commend you for loosing 170 pounds.  Keep up the good work.  The next hurdle is keeping it off.  You just have to keep doing what you are doing.  Good luck to you.

Randy -- Isn't it gratifying to be able to play with your children.  It makes all the work you've done worthwhile.  Just think of the memories your children will have because you can physically play with them.  Congrats and I have am recuperating from my workout today.

Major kudos!

William - Good luck!

Linda - I found that the only way I can be consistent is to go early morning.  once I get to work I never can make it back.

Vicky - Congratulations on sticking with it.  That is my fear.  One year and counting for me.

I hear you loud and clear... The effects of a good workout (doesn't have to be 3 hours at the gym) on a daily basis are phenomenal. I've been getting into the habit and beleivei it not just 25 minutes a day makes me feel like I'm on top of the world. A good diet is also very important.

Congrats!  It takes a lot of discipline to make a lifestyle change like that, and that's exactly what it is - a change in the way you live.

I disagree with you on the "gets easier after 2 weeks part"!  I still dread it sometimes, and I've been a consistent gym rate for 2 years now!  =)

Vincent - I have been doing the gym every other morning for about 1-1/2 hours.  I do super sets in the weight room of three or four different exercises in groups without a break.  Then I hit the stair climber and bike for 45 minutes to an hour.  On my off days I try to do something else like hit the bike at home or go walking.  Last year my idea of an exercise was getting up from the chair to change the TV channel.

Bruce - I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery.  We look forward to seeing you back on the job.  Good Luck!

Gareth - My secret is to get out of bed put on my workout clothes and get to the gym before I can think about it.  Once I am out the door I am good to go.  If I think about it, I can always find an excuse to stay home.

Gary - Surprising the hardest thing for me was giving up Diet Coke.  I gave up caffeine in December and had headaches for several days.  One of the health issues I had was a couple of episodes with kidney stones.  I now only drink water and an occasional skim milk.

Neal - It has also been a great stress reliever for me.

Leo - You will feel so much better physically and mentally.

Marchel - I bet you feel so much better since cleaning up your diet.  I ate a hamburger the other day and it made me feel sick.  My body is too used to good food.  Last year I lived on hamburgers.

Suzanne - My sons really like it.  I am now also coaching soccer for my youngest son's team.

Tracy - Mahalo (Thank you in Hawaiian)

I cut down on sugar then a month later I'm craving so bad.....last week (well, I told you) that giant container of ice cream from Costco and milkshakes all week!  I figure I quit smoking on Jan 13...haven't gained anything really....goes up and down up and down...that isn't good...no excercise (limitations from osteoarthritis....) hardly....and wondering what to do next. Maybe swimming again.

Randy-

Congrats on changing your life. I too have lost weight to this point 60lbs. My Ah Ha moment was when I picked up a 50lb bag of concrete and realized that at my former weight I was carrying this bag (heavy bag) around with me everywhere... no wonder I was tired. I have not lost much additional weight recently but I have not gained either. My next step is to join the local Y for both health and networking reasons. My whole family will be joining with me so it will be good family time too.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Best,

Scott

Randy,

That is absolutely awesome.  I remember first getting back from overseas, that must have been the best shape I've been in my life.  I remember coming home and joining a pickup game of basketball at the nearby park and being able to keep up with the guys that play everyday for a league or collegiate team.  Good for you!  Thanks for sharing!

Very Impressive Randy..this is probably the only time it is good to feel "half the man" you used to be. Keep it up, and keep the AR community informed as you are probably motivating more than you know. If your interested, you should check out a post I did about a somewhat similar situation. I wont link it here as some don't like that, but you can find it on my Blog.

Congratulations Randy on getting in shape. I'm glad you pointed out the body-mind connection in fitness and how you do so much better at work when you are fit, nourished properly, and have adequate sleep.

Double kudos for the 170 lb. weight loss. Tremendous! Cheat meals and not being perfect are ok, but stay at it. You've come too far to be anything other than your best.

Balance can be challenging in this business, mostly because we let it be. I was very active before I got in real estate and then became a couch potato, never had time to work out, but always had time for a Seinfeld re run.

A couple of things changed that 1) I could not afford to keep buying new pants 2) a friend loaned me a book titled "Younger Next Year" and 3) I got involved in JDRF's ride to cure so I have a little extra motivation to get up and get out.

Keep up the good work, knowing how much better I feel, look and behave when healthy it amazes me that the first step is stil the hardest.
