Lost his home in the fire and NO INSURANCE???

I was listening on the news today on my when into work as the radio station interviewed a gentleman who said just that: my home burned down and I didn't have a drop of insurance.

My first thought was: then there wasn't a loan on it or he would have HAD to have insurance.

His interview went on to say that his home was over 120 years old and he couldn't get insurance. Really? I've never heard of that, to be honest??

He had lived there for 25 years. He had 53 acres of land and said only about six trees didn't burn to the ground - along with his home!

News reports tonight say over 160 homes have burned. Largest loss of homes ever in the state of Colorado. And the wind is kicking up again tonight, so who knows what we'll wake up to in the morning!

Those affected by this fire will certainly be in our prayers.

Ruth, that is a very sad situation, no home to go back, and no insurance at all.  I really don't have a word for it, except praying for them.

Ruth, So sad … we have had our share of fires in my area as well. It’s amazing how people group together to support each other and how we all seem to recover. Prayers indeed.

Very tragic - but it's true, there are many places, especially in California, that are insurance challenged. Isn't there the California FAIR Plan that should have covered his property, though? http://www.cfpnet.com/ I don't know if his property would have qualified, but it might have been a good investment for him..? In any case, very sad to lose so much.  *** Ruth, I just noticed you're in Colorado, not California. Does Colorado have a similar plan?

OMG, how sad.  I sure hope he has the support of friend and family.  I also hope that everyone in the path of the fire are safe - loss of "things" are just "things".

Stay safe.

I have heard that some homes were deemed uninsurable, but that was right after the big fires in 2001 (I think it was 2001). The issue seemed to have died down. I wonder if he couldn't get insurance years ago, and just never checked again? So sad.

He'll be fine with the help of an attorney.  PG&E just announced it was a rupture and explosion in one of their major gas lines that caused the fire and resulting devastation.

This is tragic! I wonder what PG&E are going to do for those who had no insurance? This is a story worth following Ruth!

Hi Ruth, How sad it is to see the mountains on fire and so many people displaced.  I missed this story about no insurance, too - that's heartbreaking.

Melissa, I trust they will. I can know understand better the expression, "once the dust settles".

Kathy, Interesting that when you saw the blog about the fire, you thought of California. I'm not sure if we have that plan or not, to be honest. I've never heard of it for some reason so I doubt it???

Juli, He had already been offered housing. I even heard of a family that was given a YEAR of housing by an organization.

Joetta, I think you might be referring to the Hayman fire in 2002. We actually had to postpone closings because insurance companies wouldn't insure. If I recall correctly, it wasn't too long after that our contracts were changed to include a hazard insurance deadline.

Will, I think that was the fire in San Bruno California???

Jackie, PG&E electric I think is Pacific Gas and Electric (made famous by the movie Erin Brockovich - one of my all time favorites, I might add!) That must have been a fire in California, not here in Colorado.

Mary, In his interview I think he said something like "at least I'm not homeless", which made me wonder if this might have been a second home possibly???
