Kitchen Shot using Photomatrix Exposure Fusion

By
Real Estate Agent with EXIT Realty Beatrice Associates 9506757

This was an extremely large kitchen  and I wanted to try and get an overview of the whole kitchen.  One flash was certainly not going to do it so I used a combination of Photmatrix Exposure Fusion with an overlayed flash shot using three strobes.

I took 5 available light exposures at -4,-2,0,+2 and +4 and ran it through Exposure Fusion.  Than I brought that fused photo into Adobe Elements where I overlayed a flash shot and balanced the two exposures until I saw what I was looking for.

Windham NH

I have been using the Exposure Fusion feature more than the HDR.  I find it is a little easier to use and the results more realistic.

I am having far better luck with exposure fusion than HDR though I still try with both.

Kevin, excellent work!!  It might be instructive to include the component shots as well to appreciate more fully what you've done.  Again however, in my opinion this is really excellent work!

I thought I was the only one who was having trouble with HDR! I love the exposure fusion setting. You get a great look without the cartooniness.

I'm with you, Kevin ... I rarely use tone-mapping unless I'm trying for something "artistic" ... the exposure blending works much better for realistic results.

Looks great Kevin!  I like Photomatix HDR for it's light smoothing function.  I find it works really well to bring up dark areas in the photo and to get a more dramatic look to the light.  With the right tweaks in photoshop I can get it to look as good or better in some cases than the Exposure Fusion.  Sometimes I have to render both just to see which one is going to make for a better final image.

I am still struggling with good results with HDR.  I am sure it is oerator error rather than the program itself.  I did try the overall kitchen shot in HDR.  I was able to get decent results with 3 exposure rather than the 5.

Great job kevin.  I too struggle with HDr in Pjotomatix, but I've found that if I try to lighten the image to much, it seemes surreal... it works great for traditionally dark places like theatres, but I use Fusion much more often

Very nice work, how long does it take you to edit it this way?

I can run through an edit in 5-10 minutes per shot depending on the complexity.  When it comes to the online presentation it is time well spent and sellers do notice a difference.

Hi Kevin -- Very cool. I've never tried anything like this.  What do you mean you overlayed a flash shot?  Is this a separate shot from your first 5 shots?  You used 3 strobes for all 5 shots?

The flash shot is overlayed over the 5 available light shots.  There are not any strobes used in the 5 seperate exposures only the one flash overlay.
