Great blog on allowable images to use in your blog! A common misconception is that any google photo is OK to use, this simply is not the case! I enjoyed this informative blog and want to share it with the AR community :)
Using Google Images in Your Blog. Not all images that are returned via a google search are OK to use due to copyright. But there is a way to use Google Images to find photos, clipart, etc that is OK to use in your blog posts.
Using Google to Find Creative Commons Licensed Images For Your Blog
In July 2009, Google changed their filter options on their Advanced Image Search Page, to search results using the Creative Commons Licenses as a Filter.
Start by Choosing the Images Option at the top of the Google Page.
Then choose the "Advanced Search" Option
You can filter your search so that only images which have been tagged with the Creative Commons License are returned.
The two filters that you would be interested in, for your blog are:
Labeled for commercial reuse
Labeled for commercial reuse with modification
Creative Commons is a non-profit licensing organization for creative works which allows an easy way to indicate that photos can be used by others.
There are several sites online that have creative works available for use, with Flickr being the web's single largest source of CC-licensed content.
Many of the Google Images that are returned using the creative commons license do come from Flickr.
Input your search term. I've chosen Zoo Animals in my example. Make sure that your filter is set for Commercial Use.
Notice that you can change your filter settings from this page that has loaded the photos. Also you can choose images, line drawings, clipart... etc Further filtering to find just the right image for that wonderful post that you're working on.
One thing that you will want to do is, VISIT THE WEBSITE THAT HAS THE PHOTO AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS LICENSED WITH A CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE.
And Thank you to echoforsberg user on Flickr for licensing his photo through the creative commons license and then putting it on Flickr. Be sure to give credit to the person that owns the image and has graciously allowed you to use it.
If you are only interested in photos and images that are on Flickr, then it's very easy to just to search from the Flickr Site and no need to click on the licensing link. BUT if you want to see different images that are available.. more than what is only on Flickr, then the Google Advanced Search Option is a good way to go.
There are other excellent ways to find creative commons license images on the internet which are free to use. Please feel free to share your favorite spots. Some of you may be using only your own photos. I use many of my own photos but sometimes I use others that are licensed through the Creative Commons License.
