Palm Beach Boating Awareness during the Labor Day weekend..
The Labor Day weekend is approaching and all the locals know what that means. Long weekends here make it a perfect time for lots of boating in Palm Beach!! Yes, this extended weekend that is coming up is sure to offer lots of fun in the sun at Peanut Island and other popular boating areas, like the sandbar in Jupiter.
I'd like to preface this by saying that I've been to Peanut Island on many occasions and have never had a bad time, a problem or seen an incident. Then again, I like to stick to the south east side on the beach, just south of the docks. Any shenanigans are more likely to happen on the north side and the sandbar.
Drinking and hot weather just don't mix..
Most Florida beaches do not allow drinking on the beach, but Peanut Island does. This means a lot of sun, heat, people having fun and beer. This translates into people getting a little too loopy with plenty of alcohol which doesn't mix well with a sun that wont quit beating below 90 degrees. Did I mention that a few weeks ago a boat full of stripper showed up on the sandbar and the local guys were going nuts and getting a little to riled up. There was mention of a girl being found face down in the water after getting alcohol poisoning. Sadly enough, no one around her even noticed. She was rushed to the hospital once the police noticed.
Be Safe when you're boating in Palm Beach..
Safety is an issue whenever there is a lot of water traffic. Turns out that June and July normally see the most boating accidents due to congestion and inexperienced boaters. When Peanut Island gets packed, it gets really packed. Consider that normally, 1,000 to 2,000 people will visit Peanut Island on any given weekend day. With the festive weekend, you could probably bet that it will be many many more.
Starting August 12, 2007, Operation Zero tolerance is in effect..
Sadly enough, there have been some situations recently on the 86 acre recreational park.Well, the police just are not having it. We are talking about police boats from 4 nearby cities, the County police and the Coast Guard. If you're boating, you may get stopped more than once. This is a place where people can bring their families and the enforcement to keep it this way is in full effect. Even the water taxis that take you from SailFish Marina on Singer Island are being enforced by police with ID checkpoints.
Beginning on August 12, the police have been cracking down and busted 19 kids for underage drinking and 23 boaters for other violations. Drinking and boating just don't mix, as changing tides rush in and out of the nearby inlet, causing current changes in the channel near the island. Today is a full moon, so watch those tides!!

Too hot...(I haven't been to the beach in three years!) I just drive by and take pictures haha. Is this place like the cop shows except they have them in the water? You did a great safety piece...everyone should heed to this!
You live in Hawaii and you haven't been to the beach in 3 years?! wow! amazing. i would live in the water more than out!!
thanks for the compliment. 1,000's of people have read this, only you have the courage to comment, Celeste. once again it shows that you are truly special.! :))
Hi Ruth.. it really is a great place.. so unique. it was a great thing that they put all that money into it..! i have some great pictures from last weekend! :)
Hi Bill & Barbara, it was great weather!! got a nice burn and starting to peel now. it was really hot!! :) a good time though. friends, snorkeling, sandwiches, drinking water and the jet ski.. all we needed was some waves to jump with the ski! :) have you been down here before? i see you're in FL.
Nick, I gave you a 5. Wow, what beauty. I wouldn't care whether I was on the North side or not. It's fantastic. I work Lake Livingston which is beautiful on a good day but this is just amazing. Thanks for the post. Deb
Hi Debra, thanks! :) Peanut Island has its 'charm'.. I hope you get one of those amazing days soon! :) maybe I should update the post with a link to the map, so people can get the aerial view. enjoy the weekend! :)
The Peanut Island pics are awesome. I can see the connection in most people's mind's between drinking and boating (like "peas and carrots"!), but sometimes I am still a little shocked when "boats" aren't thought of as motor vehicles ("Where not driving [a car] so we can drink!") lol The police isn't too friendly with alcohol + boaters around here either...
Hi Sara, my wife took the pics as she walked the island with her friend. i was just lazy in the shade :) The boating and drinking can be an issue (especially without brakes!),. and it is also applicable to those who get carried away while just hanging out. Still a great place though, with room for everyone. :) thanks for stopping by amidst your moving. hope all is well. new beginnings are awesome :)
Hi Nick! WOW! A place loaded with sights of beauty....GOD's creation on display for all to see! You sure put together an awesome post..... one can visit Peanut Island without leaving their home or office!
UH OH! Was that YOU on the boat? Did that hurt? So you snorkel too? Who filmed? Your wife? Y'all had a BLAST!!! Is that in walking distance of where you live? Questions Questions i have for you.
So Nick, tell us how the name came into being? Is the Island shaped like a peanut? Do peanuts grow there? Peanuts sold there? Give us the scoop OK? Thanks for taking the time to share this with us all! Enjoyed ALL of it!
Hi Diane!, so when you're cold up there in winter, just visit this page! :) my, my,. those are a lot of questions. let's see, not me on a boat, but videos of me on a jet ski. not sure if it hurt, normally doesn't, yes i snorkel, i film but she took those photos in the post. it's 40 minutes from the house, but it's not far.
the name is because it was originally made from dredging the nearby inlet and then was going to be a peanut factory. Never became one, but the name stuck (like Nick the Appraiser, altough i sell real estate also,. now it seems i can't get away from it!!). no peanuts there or sold there.. and it's been recently renovated into a recreation park covering about 82 acres. >whew< i hope its all correct!! did i pass! :))
bonus info: John F Kennedy lived in nearby (super expensive) Palm Beach Island and had a bomb shelter made on Peanut Island during the Cuban Missle Crisis. It was renovated last year and now the public can visit it!! :) cooool.
This is a historic place! I meant jet ski..... (not boat)..... that was YOU? Coool! You looked like you fell off, and my question was supposed to mean did it hurt when you fell?
Well now... who'd a thunk a peanut factory? Interesting interesting! Neat, JFK's bomb shelter. Much to learn on just this one post.... Nick, you are full of it! (smile)
Hi Diane, you're too funny..! It really is a nice place and the atmosphere of the boats and outdoor water lifestyle really makes it special. Being right next to the inlet always provides for constant boats cruising by and easy access to go to the ocean after laying in the sand with a sandwich. :)) I haven't seen the bomb shelter, but that would be really cool!
Hey Marc, no that was my one weekend off... first came the house duties and then time to play in the water. You know i need some salt water to help me unwind. Boating safety is a huge issue in these parts with SO many boats out there!! as for common sense, well, we all know it's not always that common these days!! (especially after a few beers.. just ask the guy with the boat full of... well. you know ;)
Cool pictures. I like that grid layout. And it's a shame that people show their immaturity by drinking in a irresponsible manner. What a waste of life.
