Once labour day passes, thoughts turn to fall and the fairs and exhibitions that go along with the season. If you live in or near a rural community you know that the fall fair is one of the biggest events of the year.
Agricultural fairs are the place to enter your famous homemade jams, relish, pies, quilts, flowers, garden vegetables, etc. in the hopes of winning a prized ribbon.
Of course there is much more to a fall fair than that. Demolition derbies, tractor pulls, tug of wars, cow pie bingo, dung flings, beer tents, live bands and plenty more action to please adults. Of course there are always clowns, magicians, rides and other entertainment for the young ones also.
When I was young every year my parents took us to visit my grandmother in Milverton, Ontario, about an hour and a half from Oakville on the second weekend after labour day and we would spend hours enjoying the fair.
We moved to Milverton for a couple of years when I was in grade 7 and I remember spending time at the fair with my friends.
I can't remember if I ever entered anything into the fair but I'm thinking not. At least I have no ribbons to show for it.
I just noticed that the Milverton fall fair is coming up next weekend, September 17 - 19. Reading about it brought back a flood of old memories.
I think it just may be time to head back to Milverton, look up some old friends and enjoy the fresh air and all that an agricultural fair has to offer.
Maybe I will even buy a homemade pie or two.
Just not cow pies.
