Who was the first member of royalty
to visit San Diego?
Way back on December 28, 1890, King Kalakaua of the Sandwich Islands (now known as Hawaii) visited San Diego as the first stop on a tour of California.
Aboard the National City and Otay Railway, the King visited the Sweetwater Dam, orange groves, and an olive oil mill.
After spending New Year's Eve at the Hotel del Coronado, just two years old at that point, he left on January 1 to visit Riverside and Los Angeles.
Just three weeks after leaving San Diego, King Kalakaua died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco after catching a cold.

Jim ~ This is a piece of trivia I certainly was not aware of... sad to hear he died at the Place hotel in SF.. What was in the water in SD???
Interesting, Jim! Catching a cold--can you fathom the thought? We've advanced so far beyond that medically!
And, you know, it's been a VERY long time since I've heard, Sandwich Islands! That was filed WAY back in the vault!
Jim - I think it's really cool that you share pieces of San Diego history. I never knew this and find it intriguing. Sandwich islands and dying from a cold. So sad what happened to him. However it makes me grateful to be living in an age with better medicine!
Jim - Excellent information a chapter in San Diego's history. Thank you for sharing a very good blog.
I think that the Del Coronado is made for royalty! It is one of my favorite places... no wonder the King stayed there! Kathy
Interesting piece of history to share with us Jim.............I wasn't aware that Hawaii was known at the Sandwich Islands previously, or about King Kalakaua..........horrible that people died of something so common in those days..........thanks for sharing.
In the OLD Hawaii-5-O, Steve McGarrett's office was shown as a corner of the Iolani Palace in Honlulu, I wonder where the office of the NEW Hawaii-5-O will be in the NEW CBS series this fall?
Haolis (newcomer Whites) were currying favor with the Hawaiian royal family because they wanted to harvest sugar cane AND pineapple a la Castle & Cook and Dole!!!
Jim, I love the historical posts that you and Russel do! It gives more perspective to your gorgeous city!
It's that SF weather that got him.
My high school prom was at the Hotel Del. Thanks for bringing back some good memories. Great hotel, beaches and always fun to go to Coronado.

That was a nice little Hawaiian tidbit! Poor guy, having to die on his big adventure! Things were never the same after that.

I'm trying to follow up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.
I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!
Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too! At the end of the 2010, which is the Chinese Year of the Tiger, I'm going to put together a slide show or an eBook of all the ActiveRain kitties. If you see any stray cats roaming around ActiveRain, gather them up and bring them over to our forever home right here! The more the merrier!
Also, if you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days. It has great pictures and cat trivia, and you can use it year after year since it only has dates but not years.
Best wishes to everyone for a great Fall!
Hi Jim - we too stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado..... a beautiful old hotel.. Best, Gay
