72 Comments on Religion, politics and sports! We all have opinions, but what is their place in business?
Around here, it's the Giants or the Jets...
One fan will pay way too much for a seat, while the other will rip out the seat & throw it into the stands!
I pray to God I'm standing to the right when the seat flies left. But I agree...no sports, religion or politics.
Richard, it's all been said, up to an including the fact that if he owns the business it's his choice as to what he wants to do. If a Georgia fan were to come into the building, you know that that client would become yours immediately upon seeing the office. Politics and religion are a death curse to discuss with someone you don't know.
I must be an anomaly - I am very vocal to an extent about what is happening in America and the real estate market - and I am having a rather successful year - I feel people want real people to represent them in their transaction of real estate - I happen to know what I am doing and people trust me to sell their property and I do what they pay me for - if they ask me what I stand for I will answer exactly what I believe - than I sell real estate
A very timely article Richard, especially considering the polarizing times that Americans live in.
Personally speaking, I will never back down from my faith in Jesus Christ. Nor will I renounce my ultra-conservative political beliefs. Nor will I betray my loyalty to Florida State University and Coach Bobby Bowden.
However, I am NOT going to slap people over the head with a Cross, I will not encourage them to leave their political party or vote for my candidate, and I will not ask them if they want to see my autographed picture of Coach Bowden.
Because if I do those things, I risk alienating potential clients and customers.
Richard,
I do love Georgia Tech, but am happy to work with any and all school allegiances! I don't have GT plastered all over. Do get the point though.
Having said that, there is something nice about finding kindred spirits when you both feel strongly about something. To each his own.
All the best, Michelle
That is a knife that cuts both ways... Sometimes one gets the job because of the common affiliations. The question arises, is it a wash?
I do put my spiritual side out there a bit and for the most part that helps. But I stay out of the politics for the most part.
At least a fan of a sports team is not a protected class. A religious group would be another matter and there one has to tread very very lightly. Some feel it is their responsibility to let everyone know their "religious beliefs", but it you run afoul of Fair Housing regulations, be prepared for a nasty situation in our lawsuit happy society. There are many persons and groups that will be happy to take you on. I am there to help my customers buy and/or sell a home, not present my personal issues, except my attention to detail, my work ethic, etc.
I don't try to discuss any of those areas unless the client brings it up in some manner. By the same token I don't try to hide my beliefs on any subject. I'm usually pretty transparent and opinionated. I do wear a cross around my neck in plain view and I do have a "Secede" sticker on my bumper. And I'm fully committed to those two beliefs. Not much interest in sports though.
I'm guessing Bull Dogs fans steered clear of his office and working with him!
You're right that often times, I forget to include Sports fans. Those people (me included) are either this or that. It's kinda to cool to see how some people could get over the top, I think!
Like kind attracts like kind. There is a ton of human behavior research out there that proves that polarizing an audience increases profits, not decreases them. We know for sure without a doubt that being politically active as Realtors we attract very solid clients. We have proved it over and over again in our own brokerage. While I don't go around spouting off I certainly make my viewpoints clear on my blog. Since most of our sellers read our blog for a while before they call, they most all say that they love our blog and our viewpoints, again, like kind attracts like kind. The other point is that we have even been hired by very opposing political folks who are very clear about how they don't agree with us but they respect the fact that we don't cower down, that we take a stand. One couple even said to us, that is why we chose you- we will never vote for who you vote for, but we know you will take our back. We know if you stand up so strong on your beliefs, you will stand up for us. Every time we went to their home, the wife would yell and scream about one of my posts or something in the news - and we would just smile and say, tell us when you are finished. Then she would hug us and tell us what a great job we were doing! It was so funny. We were so clearly on opposing sides, yet, they trusted we would do their short sale for them and we got them off free and clear. They tell all their left wing friends about us too.
Right now the Realtor board of our state has asked all of us to get involved to defeat amendment 4 which would seriously raise property taxes , lose jobs and devastate our property values even more- how do you NOT talk to your neighbors about it? How do you NOT get out and pass out fliers and make the calls, etc for something this important. THe Realtor code of Ethics tells us that our duty IS to be involved, under all is land, and we are the protectors of that land and private property rights. It would be irresponsible to not take action in something like this because if you are not speaking up in order to do more business if you don't speak up you won't have any business left to do. #61 John- We can not discriminate against any religion as part of the fair housing act but nothing in there says you can not have a Christian Real Estate company, A Jewish realty or a Muslim Realty. AND there are many brokerages that are those types. Even our own Loreena Yeo's name of her company 3-16 is a scripture from the New Testament.
Richard:
Unless a client has known me for a long time they will have no idea about any of my political or religious beliefs. I have strong opinions on these issues but it is also my feeling that they have no place in business and can be huge detractors.
Gee, I live in Ann Arbor...huge college town. I do market to U of M fans and my branding is on my blogs, photo blogs, website etc.
I guess I am odd man out here....oh well.
Missy I believe college towns have to be different.
As a realtor, I prefer to be non-conroversal. I rarely, if ever discuss a contraversial topic with my clients. I am surprised at the questions about politics and religion I get from buyers. I always politely decline to give an opinion.
Can't mix those. I tried to write a blog on politics once and it did not go over well, almost caused a riot of laughter that is :-)
Richard,
I'm a bit confused.... are you suggesting there is a difference between college football and religion? ;-)
Tim
Here in Utah, everyone assumes your membership in the predominant religeon, as well as one political party. However, the real kicker is BYU-Utah football...or, depending on who is reading this, Utah-BYU football...Great post and comments!
