Renovating a 50's Bungalow

We are in the process of renovating a 1950's bungalow, this small house is about 700 sqft. With an addition in the 70's the size is now doubled.

The only problem was the layout, all the rooms are small and closed in, everything about this home is tired and old.

We opened up the entry way into the family room just by simply enlarging the opening. What a difference this has made! The light has just filled the space and feeling in both of these rooms are totally different.

When the addition was built, the stairs to the basement was placed in the kitchen area. To me this has always been a problem to see an open staircase from the kitchen to an unfinished basement. It's just not a pretty site.

We moved the staircase across the hall to the eat-in portion of the kitchen. We are going to change the layout of kitchen and really utilize the space with an island.

So far this has been much easier than I thought. Next we are installing new hardwood floors to replace all the different carpet and floor coverings.  Stay tuned.

Donna: I grew up in an expanded 1950's bungalow. My parents moved the stairs as well as adding an addition. They've been living there 43 years and they love it. Best,

Donna,

This sounds like great fun. I do have a question though. One of my clients just bought a beautifully redone mid-century in Newport Beach. The inspection has been a nightmare - not so much inside the house, but in the "crawl space" under the home. Have you had yours checked out?

Donna~ I absolutely love to do home improvements of any kind! I don't think there has been anything yet that I have not tried, some I am really good at some, not so much... Have fun and you should post some pictures along the way, that would be fun to look at!

Matt thanks for stopping by, wow 43 years is a long time to live in one home. I'm sure they love it! The previous owners have been at this place for about 47 years, just moved to a smaller place with less upkeep.

Ann, there are a few issues here too, one part of the basement gets a bit of water after really heavy rainfall.

Melissa, yeah this has been fun to work on, don't get me wrong its work, but we are rising to the challenge. Meaning my husband is, I'm there for moral support....

Sounds like tons of fun.  Hardwoods will definitely add lots of value to the home.
