Yes... there I was. At Borders Books... kind of slinking along through the door... hoping nobody would notice. Last night I read a post that was sort of a review of Laura Bush's book... and the review actually made the book look like something I might want to take a look at.
But... my reputation was at stake, here. Being the Texas Progressive that I am... and not having voted for a Republican since 1968 when I (gulp) voted for Richard Milhous Nixon (cuz I was angry at Hubert Humphrey).
I mean... what if someone who KNEW me... SAW me ? My life as I knew it... would be over.
Sooo... in I snuck. Stealthily avoiding any eye contact whatsoever. Although I miss my parents incredibly much, in a weird way it was fortunate that they had passed away over twenty years ago... so they could in no way be there... in Borders... to see me holding that book. They would not be pleased.
I was... actually "considering" buying a book written by a Republican. Oy !
Again... once inside... I tried to look nonchalant. Just kinda browsing, thank you. But then... there it was. Laura's book. But... as I was reaching out to dare to touch it... (I had to 'touch' it to pick it up...) something else caught my eye.
It was another book. Another political book. This one... was by Meghan McCain. Yes... THAT Meghan McCain. Johnny Mac's daughter. Meghan McCain... the "maverick's Maverick."
Ya see... Ms McCain IS a rebel, or at least, she appears to be. She actually thinks some of her Republican brether'en and sister'en have gone too far. Meghan even believes in equal rights for gays and lesbians, and also believes they have the constitutional right to marry if they so choose. Yikes... this woman is a Republican?
Well... all of a sudden, my hand "jerked away" from it's out-stretched reach towards Laura Bush's book... and very daintily picked up Meghan McCain's book. It was entitled Dirty Sexy Politics.
About six months ago... prolly longer ago than that, actually... Ms McCain appeared on the David Letterman show. Dave was "in a mood..." and gave Ms McCain a "good, incisive interview." I actually remember being impressed with how well Ms McCain handled herself with Dave.
So... I did the only thing I could to save face, and also satisfy my curiosity. After quickly scanning the book, and the jacket liner notes... I bought the book. Meghan's book, not Laura's. It was on sale for 30% off. And, I had a special Border's card... when upped my discount to 40%... and then another card that gave me an additional 10% discount. Sheesh... poor Borders was close to paying ME to buy the book... so I did.
As soon as I read it... I will again return to my blog and post a review. But... until then... please... puhleeze... do not tell ANY of my friends... that I bought a book written by a... gulp... Republican.
