I Had to Sneak Into Borders to Do It...

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

Yes... there I was.  At Borders Books... kind of slinking along through the door... hoping nobody would notice.  Last night I read a post that was sort of a review of Laura Bush's book... and the review actually made the book look like something I might want to take a look at.

But... my reputation was at stake, here.  Being the Texas Progressive that I am... and not having voted for a Republican since 1968 when I (gulp) voted for Richard Milhous Nixon (cuz I was angry at Hubert Humphrey).

I mean... what if someone who KNEW me... SAW me ?  My life as I knew it... would be over.

Sooo... in I snuck.  Stealthily avoiding any eye contact whatsoever.  Although I miss my parents incredibly much, in a weird way it was fortunate that they had passed away over twenty years ago... so they could in no way be there... in Borders... to see me holding that book.  They would not be pleased.

I was... actually "considering" buying a book written by a Republican.  Oy !

Again... once inside... I tried to look nonchalant.  Just kinda browsing, thank you.  But then... there it was.  Laura's book.  But... as I was reaching out to dare to touch it... (I had to 'touch' it to pick it up...) something else caught my eye.

It was another book.  Another political book.  This one... was by Meghan McCain.  Yes... THAT Meghan McCain.  Johnny Mac's daughter.  Meghan McCain... the "maverick's Maverick."

Ya see... Ms McCain IS a rebel, or at least, she appears to be.  She actually thinks some of her Republican brether'en and sister'en have gone too far.  Meghan even believes in equal rights for gays and lesbians, and also believes they have the constitutional right to marry if they so choose.  Yikes... this woman is a Republican?

Well... all of a sudden, my hand "jerked away" from it's out-stretched reach towards Laura Bush's book... and very daintily picked up Meghan McCain's book.  It was entitled Dirty Sexy Politics.

About six months ago... prolly longer ago than that, actually... Ms McCain appeared on the David Letterman show.  Dave was "in a mood..." and gave Ms McCain a "good, incisive interview."  I actually remember being impressed with how well Ms McCain handled herself with Dave.

So... I did the only thing I could to save face, and also satisfy my curiosity.  After quickly scanning the book, and the jacket liner notes... I bought the book.  Meghan's book, not Laura's.  It was on sale for 30% off.  And, I had a special Border's card... when upped my discount to 40%... and then another card that gave me an additional 10% discount.  Sheesh... poor Borders was close to paying ME to buy the book... so I did.

As soon as I read it... I will again return to my blog and post a review.  But... until then... please... puhleeze... do not tell ANY of my friends... that I bought a book written by a... gulp... Republican.

Hi Karen Anne-Let us know how the book is.  I saw her the other night on John Stewart, (I love that show!), and it peaked my interest.  And..no worries....no one will tell your little secret :)!

I haven't read her book yet. I did read Laura's and loved it, especially her upbringing and the years after 9-11. I also had no idea how much she did for Afghan women as the media never covered it.

I also read Roslyn Carters book. I am non partisian when it comes to reading these books as you glean so much out of "their story".

The media is full of sound bites and they leave out so much of who the person is.

Karen Anne,

No, I would never take away from your fun post!  I would like to add, I second the Hilary comment as well!

As for the pic--hubby kept making fun of my pic so, I decided I didn't want to hear his sarcasm any longer about my 'old lady' shot, so I changed it after someone captured that shot at REBar Camp in Raleigh on Friday!  He hasn't even noticed yet!  ;-)

Karen Anne,

while I like Debe have never voted just a straight ticket I try to vote for the person not the party.  I am registered in "the other camp" but have started considering changing that to independent.  Yes like Debe I agree about your Hillary comment also.

I've not had the pleasure of of ever seeing McCain's daughter interviewed.  Sounds like a level headed, common sense kind of gal.

A moderate?  I'm identifying with the both of you and was not aware of how the term was used.

I always thought I was a conservative liberal and somehow fit into that independent category.

And Karen Anne, I agree with you about Colin Powell, but he says he won't consider running (could he change his mind?)  And I hope Hillary runs with Obama next time and then takes the stage after that.

Karen Anne,

Don't feel too bad I read both of Barrack Obama's books, and you know how conservative I am. But as a conservative I still feel there are political issues that should not be political. I to agree with Mrs. McCain that the government has an obligation to treat all of it's citizens fairly and equally regardless of sexual preference.

If we the people are ever going to fix what's wrong with this country we need to stop putting so much emphasis on social issues and give a little ground to gain a lot. We need to focus on the real problems, before it's to late, ie. the housing market, the deficit, and the 'real' threats to our democracy.

Hope you enjoy your new book. Glad to see that you are enlightened enough to read it!

Karen Anne - Thank you for make a clear point that being in Real Estate means being in politics.  The context of your writing and the comments carrying your responses are an example of carefully considered positioning.  BUT .. Sorry  ... I voted for Humphrey ... even if I was mad at him!

Karen Anne, nice post and can't wait to read your review of daughter McCain's book!

OBTW: I'm hoping Hillary runs next time too!  I get the impression she would be more able to work across party lines to ACTUALLY GET THINGS DONE.

Karen Anne:  As far as Mrs. Bush goes ... I wanted to like her ... I did.  I knew of the many activities she quietly took part in.  I knew that her mother-in-law adored her ... and I think that's probably a hard thing to earn.  But every time I got to the point where I was about ready to say .. ok, she's probably an intelligent and good woman ... I would remember who she was married to.  Then all the doubts would rush back about her would rush back.  How in the world??????   As far as Ms. McCain goes, she learned much from her earlier contact and exposure to her father ... no this latter re-invention of his.  And, I suspect she grew up with just enough money and power to have honed the confidence and abilities to express them clearly and loudly without fear of reprisal.  I forgive the giggle or whatever it was that Jane saw ... as she's young.  If the Republicans were smart ... hers would be a voice that they would be cultivating for the future instead of .... well ... we'll just leave it at that.

You remain my AR political guru ... regardless of this latest Border trip ...

I'm in a red county, in a mostly red state; and I HAVE voted straight party blue, though I do not always do so. During the primary that gave President Obama the nod, my overwhelmingly red county somehow had Democrats everywhere on election day. What were they doing? Voting for Obama; because they thought Clinton was the stronger candidate, and they wanted to be sure she was not the Democrat's nominee. Silly Democrats! If left to our own devices, Hillary would have won the nomination.

I honestly believe that Republicans chose both candidates in the last election, and I love the irony that they are the reason we can save Hillary for another day. Obama inherited a crisis that had the potential to rival the Great Depression or a world war, along with hap-hazard "fixes" that had already been put in place. Regardless of what his popularity index is right now, our nation tetered on the brink and is still standing, in spite of that. To those who say the bail-outs did not work, I ask how they could so forget the depth of fear and economic failure after economic failure of the summer, fall, and winter of 2008. While we are not where we want to be, the falling dominoes have been slowed.

So stand back and wait, Hillary. Let the issues swirl around you. Republicans voted for you during the primary and they succeeded  in giving you a bye during a critical "no-win" time in our history. Your time's coming.

Karen Anne...it's ok! we won't tell. If you'd like we are having another tea party here in College  Station real soon and I would be glad to pick u up at our airport to join the party and while here you can stop at the BUSH Library. You would probably like it.! Lots of speakers are invited from all spectrums.   We Republicans breathe air and drink water just like the rest of the world.

Karen Anne, Discussing politics is tricky. You do it with grace and humor. I saw Meghan on Jon Stewart the other night, and they discuss her new book. She's giggly, fresh, and smart. Everybody, watch out. One day there may be a President McCain ... and it won't be the "Maverick".
