Goodbye to Tea Garden Springs

Last Tuesday evening a message popped up in my in-box from my favorite day spa, Tea Garden Springs, in Mill Valley, California. Happily I opened it, expecting a copy of their monthly newsletter, or a note from the managing director, or perhaps a new photo for me to enjoy and use in my business (Blanche is generous like that.)

Tea Garden SpringsIt was a note from the director, but it was far from happy. After serving the community for 16 years, they had closed their doors forever that day, a victim of the current economy.

It comes as no big surprise that when incomes are down belts are tightened and luxuries become few and far between. However, for a community to lose an established business the caliber of Tea Garden Springs is truly sad. And now more people have their income slashed---all the massage therapists, estheticians, spa staff.

If we don't want to see other beloved businesses suffer the same fate, the places the owners have poured their heart and soul into, the places that make our communities unique, we must support them.

I plan to increase my patronage of my area's Mom and Pop shops

What can you do to help keep your town alive?

Lottie - mom and pop shops are the heart and soul of many smaller communities ...... as they grow and bigger outlets move in it becomes harder and harder for the little shops to survive .....

Folks moving from the larger communities to get their little piece of heaven don't realize that by patronizing the big box stores they are destroying the backbone of that little piece of heaven they searched so long for.

Hi Lottie!  I saw this post earlier today and thought I'd come back and find it to leave a comment!  (Been a LONG day!!)  I second your suggestion to support local businesses which are not unlike our own--struggling these days.  I think that the giant box stores and chains tend to get the most support during these times and it really should be the other way around.

I'm sad to hear that your favorite spa has closed their doors.  Hopefully they'll be able to re-open in the near future but, in the meantime, I'm with you on supporting your other local favs.

Kathy, you said it well, these small businesses ARE the heart and soul of the community. While I'm not in a position to be extravagent, and that goes against my grain anyway, I CAN pay a few dollars in appreciation for the uniqueness and stellar service these businesses so often provide.

Joan, absolutely. Support Your Local Business should be put into action, not used only as a slogan.

Debe, thanks for coming back to comment. I couldn't visit this spa too often, as it was located an hour's drive from home. But, 2 weeks ago I had taken an exceptionally hard-working client/friend there for a treat. And it turns out just 3 days prior to their shutting down, I took my stressed-out daughter (in the throes of moving from Boston area to California, sad about leaving friends and her first home behind) for a much-needed couple of hours. I'm so glad I did, but it makes their demise even sadder.

Lottie, I hate to hear about the Tea Garden Springs, but your post is excellent.  And, it should serve as a reminder to us all to keep up our posts about local business. And, of course, we need to do our part to support them.

Hi Mary Kay, it's so sad. Blanche send me a beautiful note today; I hope to get her permission to publish it--when I do, you'll understand why I'm sad--and why we all need to support our local businesses, whether in Lake Charles Louisiana, Mill Valley California, or my hometown of San Carlos California

Laura, I hope to get the word out. These types of businesses are what make our towns unique; they are run by our neighbors and friends, and if we want them to remain, we must support them.
