    Readington

Created by Royal Charter of King George II "Readings" Township was formed July 15, 1730. It was the first new township created after Hunterdon became a county. During the early part of the Eighteenth Century Dutch settlers had begun putting this area in the mainstream of development. Many names of the original settlers are still to be found in Readington Township. Their descendants are numerous and some still living on family farms. Growth in Readington was slow and orderly. It was an agrarian society of little villages.

Today, Readington Township with an area of 47.8 square miles remains the largest township in the county. Located approximately midway between New York City and Philadelphia it has access to a market area that covers approximately one-quarter of the United States population. Readington is bound by the South Branch of the Raritan River on the South border, Clinton Township on the West border, Tewksbury Township on the North border and Somerset County on the East border.

Readington Township is host to one of Hunterdon's most popular and spectacular events - the annual Balloon Festival at Solberg Airport. Held each year, the festival is the largest of its kind in the East and draws tourists and participants from all over the country.

Since 1960 the township has grown from a population of 6,311 to 10,855 people in 1980. It grew to 13,400 in 1990 and, according to the Hunterdon County Planning Board population projection, by the year 2000, the Township's population will exceed 18,000 people.
