Arizona State University Department of Kinesiology operates three non-profit therapeutic horse programs in the Phoenix area. These programs are called Hunkapi Horse Programs. Their three sites are The Phoenix Zoo, Litchfield Park, and in Gold Canyon at the D-Spur Ranch just off Peralta Trail in Gold Canyon Arizona.
Hunkapi was founded as a research program in 1996. When compared to other sports, research showed that horseback riding was the most positive intervention for children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism. The results of this research prompted the formation of the community outreach programs in 1999.
