The magical phrase "ski in ski out". It congers up images of a dream ski vacation where everything is at your finger tips. Beautiful vistas, getting the snow report by walking out on your deck, first chair on a powder day, finishing the day by skiing to your own doorstep..... What could be better?
One important question to ask is- how good of a skier or rider do I have to be to take advantages of a ski in ski out property, and don't forget about your family and friends skiing/riding abilities?
It's been my experience that you need to be able to ski/ride a easy blue square trail (PSIA Level 5/Intermediate) to take advantage of owning a ski in ski out property. All to many times I've met people on the slopes in a giant wedge trying to make it back to their ski in ski out property. The conversation usually goes like this:
Skier: Excuse me is this the way back to xyz?
Me: Yes, your going the right direction.
Skier: Is there any other way?
Me: Well, no this is the only way.
Skier: But I was told I could ski back to the property.....
Me: Yes you can but you need to be able to ski a blue square trail.
Skier: But I've only skied green trails....
Me: Then you may want to go to the base area and get back another way, walk, bus, call for a ride, taxi etc.... But if you go that way it's blue trail.....
There are a lot of ski vacation home owners who do rent their properties out part of the ski season, and this can be a great way to off set the cost of a vacation property, but owners must take into consideration that owning a property that requires the skier/rider to be a advanced beginner may also be a negative.
The odds are if 6 people rent a property for a ski vacation there is usually one or more skiers/riders who have never skied or have only skied once or twice. This can be a potential problem for the beginner skier causing possible injury, or even worse tears from a loved one.......
When considering buying your ski vacation property a good alternative is "Walk to Slopes". Not only are these properties close to the ski lifts but also can be very close to coffee houses, restaurants, and shops. Not only are "Walk to Slopes" properties convenient but everyone can stay together and not feel left out or get hurt trying to keep up.....
