San Diego to Get a New National Cemetery While the Original Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery Gets a Makeover

By
Industry Observer with Retired

San Diego's New National Cemetery is now  under construction and the original Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is getting a makeover.

Veteran Military casket burials at the Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma have not taken place in 44 years with the exception of those killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. There have been family members laid to rest with honored loved ones that already have a plot. There have been thousands of cremation burials but Rosecrans simply ran out of space for casket burials. There is a site that I will link here that has the rules and guidelines for who qualifies for burial at national cemeteries and the details of the Veteran Benefits and it is a fascinating read if you are interested.

The makeover of the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery will cost in the range of 20 million for the additional columbarium walls being built on annexed property adding  approximately 27,000 additionsl burial niches that will keep the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery vital as an active cemetery for at least another decade.

There will also be a re-alignment of the headstones that have slipped or tilted out of alignment. You can see in the photo below why this has become necessary. Our national cemeteries are source of national pride and they require a great deal of maintenance. Each marble marker weighs in the range of 240 pounds and when installed into fresh soil, they sink, slip and tilt out of alignment over time.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

The process if re-aligning these marble markers is not as easy as it might sound. First the headstone has to be removed and stored. Each marker has an etched number on the back side and it must be recorded. Then they will trench the space to 3 feet deep, pour concrete and then set a cement box that will support the marble headstone. Then the space will be filled in with gravel and then sod.

The new National Cemetery will be located at the Miramar Marine Air Station and plans to open for casket burials in February 2011. When the new cemetery opens, I will be there and bring this post up to date. It will not have the stunning coastal views of Fort Rosecrans but I am expecting that it will be quite beautiful and will have a very unique distinction. Because of the air station being located adjacent to the cemetery, the grave-sites will have daily flyovers.

I came back to this post this morning and didn't want to end this post without adding a note about the pride that I feel about the many that rest here having given their all. When I walk among them, I get goose flesh at the awesome sacrifice they have each made. To these men and women that have demonstrated their total love of our country, may they always know they will be in our hearts and minds, no matter what time of year. We honor them!

William ~  It is interesting to read about how these national cemeteries work and who is qualified to be laid to rest.  It certainly is a big undertaking to do this makeover.

Interesting - most VA cemeteries have gone to the flat grave markers to avoid the resetting issue.  I used to work at one so I've seen it.

William, I've driven by this cemetary several times on visits to Point Loma for the views.  It's a somber, yet beautiful place!  I did not realize the extent of the effort to keep the tombstones aligned.  From the outside, driving by, they always seemed so perfectly placed.  Thanks for the informative post!

Hi Joan, I learned a lot about this issue and it is really interesting Joan. I have really been impressed with this effort. I drove by Miramar and saw stacks of what looked to be the new markers. But after reading Jeff's comment I am not sure if they will be the upright type or flat markers.

Hi Jeff, I commented to Joan above about seeing what I thought were the stakes of markers markers. But after reading our comment, I might be mistaken about what I thought I saw. I'll know soon enough as I update this post in February when the cemetery opens. Thank you for the excellent comment.

Hi Ray, I understand what you mean , clearly. But I can tell you that even going here give one a sense of so much honor and sacrifice. I have many many hours there appreciating this great land that these men and women sacrificed everything for. It is very humbling.

Hi Liz and Bill, I had the exact same thoughts. And then when I was there and photographed the the splendor of this amazing place, it became apparent to  me and disappointed me at the same time. t was  as if no one cared which was totally wrong. Understanding better what it take in effort and funds, I really appreciated it all the more.

H Regina, Listening and reading and getting out and discovering it fresh as if for the first time, even though I have lived here over two decades. Through my camera lens I have came to so appreciate things in ever more detail and with a sense of newness as if seeing things for the first time.

Good Morning Sharon,

Thank you. I really appreciated the comment. I suppose I had never given this much thought before but this camera of mine has helped open my eyes to so many things. As the news of the makeover and new cemetery came out, I looked through my photos and I can clearly see why it was necessary. When you are there in person, you are so struck with the vastness  and with so many laid to rest there and the simple splendor of this final resting place of honor, you don't necessarily register the headstone that has slipped from perfect alignment. But we do want it perfect for them for perpetuity. It is the least we can do to honor them.

William, it is very moving to me to look at all those grave stones and think about the thousands of people who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Freedom isn't free - every generation must claim it for themselves.

William - Great Post.  I too had no idea the amount of work it is going to take to align all those markers.

Seeing your post and reading your reflections makes me wonder even more about the thinking of those who vandalize such places!

William - That is a awe inspring sight!   Your picture, with the untold numbers of gravestones, puts into perspective the legions of men and women, who have sacrificed so we can continue enjoying our way of life.  It's hard to look at that, and not be humbled in a significant way!

Hi Joan, I had never thought that vandalism was a big issue. I am sure over time they have all seen their share. These grounds are hallowed and if someone did do something, I fear I could not be very mericiful.

H Myrl, When I used to travel to DC every year for our NAR directors meetings, usually on a Saturday morning I would go by self  to Arlington. I think over the years I have covered most of the grounds but I know there are probbably sections I  have not been to. The last time I went there it was a misty type of rain early in the morning. I recall finding a bench near the entrance and I just left the umbrella there. I didn't want to carry it.  I wanted to feel the emotion and let the rain drip down my face. I stayed for about 4 hours and then I felt complete. I never snapped one photo. The pride of our country , the history and these monuments to life are truly humbling that such greatness was and remains our legacy.
